Walt Coleman

I've stopped paying attention to this nonsense, but I just saw on SportsCenter that Bob Kraft's favorite referee screwed the Lions today.
The NFL is a joke.

Re: Walt Coleman

I just watched this:

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/longest-rushing-play-texans-history-stands-odd-review-203919447--nfl.html

Indeed, the NFL is a joke.  I remember 30 years or so ago, when I used to watch every week, Walter Payton made a very long run for a touchdown, outran all the refs, and set the ball on the ground in the end zone, as was his low-key style.  An opponent picked the ball up and ran with it.  The refs ruled it a recovered fumble, taking away the the TD and giving the whoevers the ball on wherever they guy go to.  Payton couldn't believe it, ran up to talk with the ref, tapped him on the shoulder, and got a flag and got ejected--players can NOT touch a ref.  So a TD turned was erased, turned into a fumble, and a very mild mannered Hall of Famer was ejected.  It's infuriating.

Then again, that perfect game that got taken away two seasons back, simply because the first base ump couldn't make a routine call at first was pretty fucking infuriating, too . . . and I didn't even give a shit about either team in that game.

Re: Walt Coleman

Here's the part I don't understand. Why cancel the mandatory review of the play?

Feel free to flag Detroit for unsportsmanlike conduct and enforce the penalty at the next appropriate moment. But review the play and get the call correct.

The best part was the Detroit assistant coach punting his clipboard. I'm starting to hear this is coming under the "good call; bad rule" rationale that made Coleman a hero in New England.

The difference being the umpire acknowledged the mistake and expressed contrition. The NFL almost never acknowledges its officiating mistakes, and in fact will make shit up to cover for them.
