Little Opposition Emerges to Expand Playoffs

WTF? How can you not oppose this? The only reason they are not is because they think it will result in more money. For the Cardinals it would only set the bar lower for thier annual goal of making the playoffs.

One of the things baseball people always talk about is the endurance required to prevail in a 162-game season. The more playoff teams that are added, the less meaningful the regular season becomes.
Jeffrey Loria doesn't see any minuses. Isn't that a reason in itself to scrap the entire idea?

The random blogger does a decent job attacking this proposal:
"Almost all of the power brokers at Major League Baseball, an entity that could use a visit to the ophthalmologist for its short-sightedness, burst with pleasure at the idea of expanding the game’s postseason. . . . The original wild card came about to help owners offset $280 million in damages for colluding against the players in the mid-1980s, and the newest version – still in its planning stages but almost certain to be implemented by 2012 – is no different in its motivations."

Maybe this isnt such a bad thing. It would give more teams a chance to play in the playoffs but it would punish the wild card team by makin them play another series. Instead of lowering the bar by allowing more playoff team it would actully be rewarding teams for winning their division.
Winning your division would allow you to enter the second round with the rotation st the way you want it. If you end up being th wildcard team to advance from the 3 game series your rotation would be out of wack and bullpen taxed. The biggest issue I see is the travel days. Say the Mets play the Gaints in the wild card series. They would play on the west coast for game one, off for a travel day, play game two on the east coast, off a day and then finsih up on the west coast. Then they would be off for a couple days before the first round of the playoffs. It would drag the playoffs out another week.

The only way baseball reverts to the national pastime is if Selig becomes commissioner of the NFL.

a goal they have failed at 75% of the time over the past 4 years.
and then, of course, if you do make the playoffs "anything can happen" . . . like getting your ass swept.
