"Now, regarding Ichiro, I suspect that the Mariners were willing to go the extra mile to accommodate his wishes when they traded him"

They wouldn't have had a choice.  Ichiro had 10 & 5 protection.  He had to agree to any proposed trade.

It's a limited market.  In the realm of supply and demand, Furcal has the supply side of the equation cornered.

Sounds like the Cardinals are looking seriously at Scutaro and will definitely trade Schumaker.

I would prefer Yunel Escobar to Scutaro, even though he's a colossal dick, but if they can come away with one of those, Sean Burnett and Scott Hairston and stop bunting with fucking Jon Jay they probably win 93 games.

I would be surprised if they weren't interested in Scutaro.  Maybe I am stretching a point, but I tend to think their interest in Suppan all those years back was partly because he did some of his best pitching against the Cardinals, shortly before he went on the market.  After watching that guy kick their ass it would be hard not to see him as a potential answer.

I am curious as to how tradable Schumaker is.  He has struck me as one of those guys that La Russa likes and promotes, but who wouldn't have much value outside of a La Russa managed team.  He is a defensive plus in the outfield, and his work ethic is unassailable.  But his offense is so weak for an outfielder that he just doesn't find a place easily.

If he was American, yes.  But never underestimate how important it can be for a person from a country that we, in America, would call a developing country to help their country to gain international prestige.  It may be that Cards FO will privately seethe, but as long as it is not forbidden in his contract, it doesn't surprise me one bit that he would accept the opportunity to play for glory of Mexico.

Good point.  And frankly I probably heard as much on local radio.  I didn't watch baseball this year, but I live close enough to Seattle that we get their news.  I remember being in the bar the night the trade was announced.

Unless Mexico is willing to insure the remaining $23M of his contract, I'd say the Cardinal front office will do more than privately seethe.

Well, that's why I wrote something along the lines of: "if his contract does not forbid it".

Small difference.  Are you saying Schu is tradable?

Outfielder B is Schumaker 2011-12. Outfielder A is Ichiro, same time period.

Re: New 2013 Cards Hot Stove

Well, I think we're all agreed that Ichiro doesn't have a lot of value, other than his name and watching him break some records.  Could the Yankees sign Ichiro and then trade him?

Look, I could be way off base.  I am just wondering if Schu has any trade value at all, or in La Russaian terminology, could a trade for Schu bring "legitimate help"?  Is the answer is, "yes", then "WOO HOO!"

Re: New 2013 Cards Hot Stove

I just thought ironic that a guy with Skip Schumaker-like numbers got indignant because the Yankees weren't falling over themselves to offer him a contract.

Your description of Skip as a "defensive plus in the outfield, and his work ethic is unassailable.  But his offense is so weak for an outfielder that he just doesn't find a place easily" sort of funny because it's equally applicable to Ichiro.

On third thought he sounds to pricey in both years and dollars.

"2:10pm: Bidding for Scutaro is said to have reached something in the neighborhood of three years and $24MM, with the Giants still in the lead, tweets ESPN.com's Buster Olney.

12:27pm: Scutaro isn't expected to sign with another team without the Giants getting a final shot at him, says Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle (Sulia link).

11:43am: The market for free agent infielder Marco Scutaro is heating up, according to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports. The FOX duo reports that the Cardinals are eyeing Scutaro as a potential starting second baseman, while the Yankees, in the wake of news of Alex Rodriguez's hip surgery, also likely have interest.

The Giants have also been working to re-sign Scutaro, as we heard yesterday that San Francisco had been "bending over backward" to retain Scutaro and Angel Pagan. With Pagan locked up, the Giants may become more aggressive on the 2012 NLCS MVP.

The Cardinals met with Scutaro's agent Barry Praver on Monday in Nashville, as Danny Knobler of CBS Sports tweeted last night.

WTF! Moz better pick up the phone and squash this. Playing for your country is nice, but resting your sore shoulder so you can play for the team that pays your salary seems like a higher priority.

Good question. He obviously doesn't have 10/5 anymore because he was traded from the M's. I'm pretty certain if you sign a FA from another team, you can't trade him until around July, but I'm not sure what happens if a FA signs with his most recent team. I assume he could be traded right away, but that's just a guess.

Scutaro re-ups with the Giants for 3 years. That's a ludicrous deal.

Trading Skip would be a salary dump and free up a roster space move.  I wouldnt look to get much in return.  Maybe a midlevel prospect but yeah, that is what we thought when Freese arrived.

Glad the Cards passed.  3 years is at least one to many.  Id say this is a past preformance contract.

Yeah. This reminds me of when the Cardinals have Edmonds that foolish 2 year deal after 2006. They're paying him for what he did in the World Series and playoffs. Dumb.

Supposedly Hanley is headed back to SS. The rumor was they were looking for young pitching. The Cardinals have pitching and a need for a SS. I'm not sure there were ever real discussions as opposed to someone at MLB Network deciding it could make sense.
