I don't think the Cardinals were ever in the mix for Keppinger. All the reports I read suggested he wanted assurances of playing time. There was a lot of thought he'd end up with the Yankees after it was announced that A-Rod was hurt.

The hunting curse apparently extends to ex-Cubs, as well:

The Texas Rangers have traded infielder Michael Young to the Philadelphia Phillies, according to major-league sources.
The trade was first reported by Bob Nightengale of USA Today.
The Rangers will get right-handed pitchers Josh Lindblom and Lisalverto Bonilla, according to reports.
Young had a five-year, $80 million deal with the Rangers through the 2013 season and a full no-trade clause, which he had to waive for the deal to go through.
The Rangers are picking up approximately $10 million of Young's remaining salary and the Phillies are giving him a no-trade clause.
Young will likely play third base for the Phillies. It's possible that he would not have had an everyday role for Texas in 2013.
Young, 36, is a seven-time All-Star and won the American League batting title in 2005 with the Rangers.

I am not sure what type of pitchers the Phillies gave up or what the Cardinals would have had to do to match it but Young would have been a nice fit. 2012 wasnt a great year for him but he doesnt have health issues. He could have played at any infield position and batted in the middle of the order. I doubt it would be a good idea to make him the everyday SS but at least he could play there. the Cardinals dont seem as worried as I am about not having a backup third baseman. It is fine to ride Delscalso at second or even short. However if Freese goes down, like he normally does, they lose a middle of the order batter and third baseman. Adding Young and playing him at second would provide protection to Freese and Furcal at the same time. If the Rangers are picking up 10 million then it would have olny cost the Cardinals 6 million. Again IDK what the Phillies gave up to get him. I cant think the payroll maxed Phillies would have gave up top tier projected cost controled pitchers.

Matt Carpenter is the backup 3rd baseman, isn't he?

Scal can play third, too. And Rick Ankiel is available.

AP was expressing concern that if Freese got hurt, the team would lose a middle of the order-type bat. IMO, M. Carpenter is a better middle of the order bat than M. Young.

Myers is supposed to be the real deal.
The Royals have drafted well for awhile now. Imagine how good they would be if their owner cared about winning.

Not sure if anyone else saw it, but Game 6 of the 2003 NLCS was on MLBN last night. Watching that one never gets old.
And Alex Gonzalez ought to wake up every morning and thank Steve Bartman for going to that game. That error on what would have been an inning-ending double play ball was far more damaging than anything the geek with the headphones did.

The Dodgers are spending all this money on the basis of their TV deal, which of course begs the question by Magic Johnson et al are allowed to commit those resources and McCourt wasn't. I know we've been hearing this since the advent of free agency, but if Bud wants the Yankees and Dodgers to play in the World Series every year, he's going about it the right way.

The almost criminal aspect of this is how the Royals shamelessly promoted all off the Futures Games events around Myers. And it isn't like the Royals don't have a place to play him. The Royals are still playing Jeff Francoeur in RF.
I'd love to hear the explanation of how the Royals wouldn't be better if they had simply put Myers in RF and either Odorizzi in their rotation or spent the money they're paying Shields for either Sanchez, Lohse or Dempster.

"CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Cleveland Indians have traded outfielder Shin-Soo Choo to the Cincinnati Reds and acquired pitcher Trevor Bauer from the Arizona Diamondbacks in a three-team deal involving nine players.
Center fielder Drew Stubbs was sent from Cincinnati to Cleveland as part of the trade announced Tuesday night.
In addition to Stubbs, the Indians received Bauer, the No. 3 pick in the 2011 draft, and right-handers Matt Albers and Bryan Shaw from the Diamondbacks.
Cleveland shipped Choo, infielder-outfielder Jason Donald and cash to the Reds, while sending left-handed reliever Tony Sipp and first baseman Lars Anderson to Arizona.
The Diamondbacks also received minor league shortstop Didi Gregorius from Cincinnati."
Kind of an odd deal for the Reds, especially after they re-signed Ludwick. They have three corner outfielders and no centerfielder. Donald is filler.
I don't know much about the prospects the Diamondbacks acquired, but I can't believe they gave up Bauer. The winner of this deal right now is the Indians. They got a potential top of the line pitcher for a player they were probably going to lose at the end of the 2013 season anyway.

Odd, but the Reds are still above the Cardinals unless an upgrade is made at SS or 2B. This is still an 88-win team IMO.

I worry Carpenter will be overexposed as an everyday player and dont see him as a middle of the order type bat. However he is a suitable backup third baseman.

Well, like Rick and Ilsa will always have Paris, Skippy and Cardinal Nation will always have Game 5 of the 2011 NLDS. Bon voyage, Skip. You were a consummate pro in St. Louis who always put the needs of the team before your own.
"ESPNLosAngeles.com reported early this morning that the Cardinals will receive minor-league shortstop Jake Lemmerman in the deal. Lemmerman, 23, was a fifth-round draft pick from Duke in 2010; he batted .233 with seven homers and 46 RBIs at Class AA Chattanooga in 2012."

MLBN suggested last night that Choo will play center, because he won't have to cover a lot of room in the outfield at Great American Home Run Park.

At this stage of his career, neither is Michael Young. Given a choice between the two, I'd rather have Carpenter.

Aye. Carpenter's value right now is in his versatility. He can play four positions, and he's a jim dandy alternative if one of the starters at the corners needs a day off or goes on the 15-day DL, but if he starts 150 games this year, it would be bad news.

Skip was the consummate scrappy white guy that St. Louis fans love. Problem was that once he lost what little speed he had, his offense became extremely limited. Still, he was a great "team first" type of guy.

I had the pleasure of meeting Skip when the Cardinals were on a tear, and he was doing really well. I ambushed him while he was taking out the garbage (He lived in the condominiums behind the building I worked in apparently), and he was super cool, very humble, and really seemed honored that I knew who he was at all. He shook my hand, thanked me for watching, and seemed really sincere in his humble demeanor that I'd seen on television.
I've been fortunate never to have met a dickhead professional athlete. I've heard horror stories, specifically about McGwire and Pujols (two of the biggest heroes of my fan-life at different times), and it would really suck to end up hating someone because they had a chance to capture your heart with a handshake and a sincere hello, and instead made an ass out of themselves.
Strangely enough, I met Mike Danton, with my 5 year old daughter at the time. He was the murder for hire guy back about 5 years ago on the Blues. Nicest guy ever, and treated my daughter like she was royalty. Sad. I found it difficult to believe that he had the issues he had, because he was so frigging nice in person.
