Cody Ross 3/$26M to the D'Backs
Nick Swisher 4/$56M to the Indians

On its face, the Ross deal looks strange for Arizona, but when you combine him and Jason Kubel they're spending about $14 million for a platoon that is going to be really, really good. Some of the other moves are kinda puzzling, but that's actually a strong unit.

Four years for swishers seem like alot. Isnt he in his mid 30s?
Offline
He's 32. Reading the stories, it sounds like there's a 5th year that will vest fairly easily.
Makes you wonder if they'll be trying to move that contract in a year or two.

The way salaries are going, I don't even think the $1.5M price tag was that big of a deal. The average MLB salary is something like $3.3M.
FWIW, I think median is more informative here.
Going by this chart, it looks like the median of the median is about $1.1 million. Interesting that the Brewers were ahead of the Yankees.
Well that's exactly the point. When you're paying one guy $27 million a year, your average salary os bound to be higher than your median salary.
Interesting too to see where BDW Jr.'s Cards sit: 8th in average payroll (they're paying a shitload in total dollars), and 22nd in median (lots of bucks are going to a few players).

I am not sure what a high median proves or payroll in genreral. It is always more complex then spend more and being better. You cant buy wins.

In terms of an individual guy, who is not a star and not a rookie, median salary should help to gauge what an average guy like that might earn, whereas average salary probably would not if the distribution of salaries is not "normal", which it almost certainly is not. Most salary distributions will be heavily right-skewed, with many guys earning below average salaries, and a few guys way out on the right side of the graph earning WAY over average. Additionally, if average is 3.3, and one guy makes 27, it is mathematically impossible for another guy to earn -20.4 million, in order to even things out, mano-a-mano. So there is that, too.

It's hard to figure out what the Pirates are trying to do sometimes:
"BOSTON (AP) -- The Red Sox have acquired All-Star closer Joel Hanrahan from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a six-player deal.
"Boston completed the trade Wednesday, also receiving infielder Brock Holt. The Red Sox gave up right-handers Mark Melancon and Stolmy Pimentel, infielder Ivan DeJesus Jr. and first baseman-outfielder Jerry Sands."
Don't know much about the minor leaguers involved, except I think DeJesus is a former first round pick who has been a disappointment. Sands couldn't stick with a Dodgers team that was desperate for offense, and Melancon is a big ol' sissy. Looks the Pirates got a shiny new quarter for a handful of nickels.

Reading through MLB trade rumors:
*So Mike Napoli isnt a Red Sox yet because of a hip injury? If the deal falls through Napoli is in a pretty thought spot now that alot of the off season has passed. I didnt know he was hurt.
*Mariners did pretty good in getting Raul Ibanez for 2.75-4 million.
*Cubs didnt make a bad move when they ditch Soto. If he cant hit in Chicago or texas he simply cant hit. AJ Pierzynski is taking his job. Pierzynski's deal is pretty fair to. One year 7.5 million after a 27 HR season.

The Pirates trading Joel Hanrahan is wierd. The move at best is a move to try and build the farm system. I thought they were in a win now mode.

"The Pirates trading Joel Hanrahan is wierd."
Maybe it's because his wife is a lesbian.

Ok. That's hot. Well, depending on what she looks like, that has great potential to be hot.

Not sure which is which but both work for me.

I was referring to the wife of the goalie in Slap Shot, but those two might be lesbians.

LOL. It might have registered if you called her a dyke. What a hysterical movie.

Just for you Max, I calculated the median using the Opening Day 2012 rosters (750 total players)
Salary #375 (actually salary #369-375) was $1.75M and was a tie between 7 players: Joe Smith (Cle), Ryan Sweeney (Bos), Brendan Ryan (Sea), Fernando Rodney (TB), Bryce Harper (Was), Nate McLouth (Pit) and Takaski Saito (Ari).
Salary #376 was Mark Lowe (Tex) $1.7M
Schumaker's $1.5M tied for #391.
(Yes, it really is that boring during the week between Christmas and New Years Day).

The clip gets cut off before the best line in the scene, when one of them asks if Hanrahan's wife is a lesbian, "Does that make him a queer?"

EJax to the Cubs, 4 years/$52 million.

Rafael Soriano to the Nats. 2 years, $28M.
Shows what I know. Turns out it paid for him to opt out of his deal.

Wow that is alot. 14 million a year for a bullpen pitcher.

He's the highest paid reliever in baseball now.
Boras must love calling up Mike Rizzo. I wouldn't be surprised if they wind up giving Lohse $60 million and Bourn another $70 million.

McClellan to the Rangers:

I didnt even think the Nationals needed pitch help. They seem pretty solid if they would use the pitchers they have.

Thanks. When we move to median, Schumaker's salary doesn't seem like as much of a bargain as it does when we look at average. It all depends on what we want to compare.
On average, a GM shells out $3.3 per player, whereas a middling player earns $1.75. Schu earned just about what a middling player earns.

I know nothing about the prospect the Nationals ended up with, but I'm glad to see Morse go. He's a beast who always seemed to kill the Cardinals.
