Manti T'eo girlfriend and her death a hoax

T'eo and Notre Dame claiming he was the victim of a hoax. I'm calling bullshit. Too many stories about their first "meeting" after a game at Stanford and other visits. This guy is a complete fraud.

Sports Illustrated ought to stick to printing pictures of bikini models. That magazine's usefulness to society has otherwise ceased.

Why does anyone care what goes on in sport players personal lives?

Re: Manti T'eo girlfriend and her death a hoax

I have no idea what happened in this Manti thing. He's either a major d-bag, or a fkn idiot.

On the one hand, would he really make up a dead girlfriend after losing his grandmother? Wouldn't that soil her memory?

On the other, if he didn't... Why in the fuck is the Heisman runner up, star linebacker for the University of Notre Dame having to find romance online???? Seriously wtf???? This is one of the few blessed men in this world that can snap his fingers and line up identical twin sisters for an evening... So going to a long distance online thing with some random from the internet in STANFORD is pretty fucking retarded...

Unless he's gay, and didn't want women coming after him and having to fight that off all the time... That could be it, but that's still an idiot move.

Re: Manti T'eo girlfriend and her death a hoax

It would be less of a story if this guy hadn't perpetuated his mythical persona of having overcome in surmoutable odds in leading Notre Dame to an undefeated regular season and the #1 ranking.  This isn't just about his personal life, AP.  Te'o darn near rode this fabircation to a Heisman Trophy.  As it is, he won several other college awards.  Perhaps he deserved them absent the story, but there's no question that the media bought into this story hook, line and sinker and the endless hype and continued perpetuation of mythical dead girlfriend likely helped.

Then you've got the upcoming NFL Draft.  Te'o's abilities as a linebacker were exposed during the Alabama game.  But the one enduring characteristic that we've been searing about, even since the NCG was that Te'o possessed all the "intangibles."  High character, leader, inspirational teammate, etc...  Can any of those things be said with all the questions as to whether he participated in this hoax?

And I think there's one more 10-ton elephant in the room that has been addressed in a few off-the-beaten path stories, but not in the stories being run by the major media markets.  Supposedly Te'o's relationship with the fake girl friend lasted for 2-3 years.  Not only hadn't he met her, but we're supposed to believe that Te'o never Skyped, never had a video-chat or a Facetime conversation with a person who was the supposed "love of his life" who was in a near-fatal car crash and later diagnosed with leukemia.

Why would a well-known college football player, a devout Mormon at a major Catholic University make up a story about a long-distance, online relationship?

Perhaps it shouldn't be news, but it certainly would be--what if the football player who damn near won the Heisman Trophy and who's about to be a NFL 1st round draft pick was actually gay?  Can you imagine the shit storm that would kick up.

You and I think a lot alike here, fors. lol It was the only damned reason I could come up with for making up a largely unavailable woman, giving her a tragedy so you don't need to actually be seen with her, and still having some reason for her existance at all.

Here's one theory--by the time his grandmother died, the "girlfriend" had already been in a car crash and already diagnosed with leukemia.  Even without the girlfriend's death, that's a lot of tragedy.  Te'o is at Notre Dame and already well-known.  Is there a risk the media does a story on those tragedies and tries to locate the girlfriend?  Was the girlfriend killed off to avoid efforts by the media to locate/contact her?

My wife would be lucky if she could identify a football on a table with a baseball, basketball, and hockey puck.  But when I was watching SportsCenter last night and she heard a couple minutes of the story, her first reaction was, "isn't it obvious he's gay and the "girlfriend" was actually a guy with whom he's having a relationship."

It certainly isn't far-fetched.  Te'o is apparently a devout Mormon from a deeply religious family.  He's at a prominent Catholic University, plays a sport where men have to be beyond macho and dreams of making the NFL.  Meanwhile, he's at college hanging with his buddies and there are chicks everywhere looking to bang a football player.  If your buddies never see you with a girl or never see you trying to get laid, they may start to talk.  What better excuse that remaining faithful to a "girl" halfway across the country?

The other thing that leads me to believe this is the real story behind the story is that there's simply too much technology available nowadays.  Skype, video-conferencing, Facetime, etc...  You'd have to be an awfully committed hoaxster to spend hours Skyping with Te'o, and I find it difficult to believe that anyone involved in a long-distance relationship isn't using some source of communication that involves video.  I'm just not buying the story that Te'o didn't know.  But if he knew and participated and it was just a hoax, then common sense says you get in front of the story now.  The only reason to perpetuate a continued lie is that the truth is potentially more damaging than allowing the lie to linger.

Funny how that works, eh? We'll be in a room with 200 people and my wife will point out the one (or more likely two) gay guys, while I'm completely oblivious.
As far as the story is concerned, I could care less if Te'o is gay, but anything that could possibly result in embarrassment to the University of Notre Dame is something I'll enjoy.

Re: Manti T'eo girlfriend and her death a hoax

Already been mentioned, but it's nice to see that Notre Dame is so concerned with a fake dead girl rather than the real dead girl who killed herself because of a rape situation.

Or the dead kid who Brian Kelly sent up in a cherry picker during a wind storm so he could get good video footage of his practice.

Re: Manti T'eo girlfriend and her death a hoax

Correct.

Also, now would be a good time for Te'o to just admit that he's gay. NFL execs just aren't going to let this go. It's going to go deeper and if he keeps lying, he'll be Tebow's teammate in the CFL next season.

Re: Manti T'eo girlfriend and her death a hoax

ESPN has spent the last five minutes talking about this. I understand this may say something about Te'o's character, but it's becoming British tabloid stuff.

On a slightly different tack, am I the only who who doesn't give a rat's behind about Lance Armstrong?

I only really care about the people that son of a bitch went after legally trying to ruin them over the last 10-15 years for trying to tell the truth.

Beyond that, no... He rides a bike, it's just not that exciting.
