Eight Men Out

On MLBN, Costas is talking to Sayles and John Cusack about making the movie. Cusack is a Cubs' fan. Which explains why he's such a limp-wristed weenie.

Re: Eight Men Out

I couldnt finish the book or the movie.  I thought both sucked.  I found that the book was hard to follow.  Seemed like an endless supply of characters to which I couldnt seperate.  I got about 1/3 the way through and gave up.  The movie was much the same.

MLBN is doing a thing where they play a baseball movie every monday.  I watched Cobb for the first time.  i was pretty disappointed.  It was more about the writer, Al Stump and is was the worst acting Tommy Lee Jones has ever done.  The foillowing week they played League of their Own.  I am sorry but that isnt a baseball movie.  Tom hanks acts like a pussy and Rosie Odonnell is in the fucker.

I also found Cobb to be extraordinarily disappointing. And if you can't make an interesting movie about Ty Cobb, it's time to park cars or work at the Dairy Queen.
Hanks is the main reason to watch A League of Their Own. He doesn't pull the movie out of the shitter, but he has some good lines. And Jon Lovitz's character is pretty funny.
I'll have to dispute you on Eight Men Out, though. I liked it. I didn't think the baseball was particularly well-done (all the actors except for D.B. Sweeney and Charlie Sheen throw like girls), but the story is compelling.
Sayles said one thing in the Costas interview that was pretty interesting about Asimof not liking the film. It wasn't for the creative reasons authors usually cite when their books are made into films. Apparently, Asimof used to sell the rights with the condition that the film had to be made within a certain time frame (I think Sayles said two years), and when it wasn't, Asimof recouped the rights and sold them to someone else. So when Sayles actually ended up making a movie, Asimof got pissed because his cash cow was killed.

Re: Eight Men Out

Maybe it is the grainy datedness that I dont like about the film.  IDK, couldnt get into it.  Of course I am stalled out on TLR new book to.  i havent picked it up in awhile.

I alway pictured TLR as an asshole.  I know it is a WS book but I am getting bored with the fluff.

Re: Eight Men Out

I am trying to think of baseball movies I think are really good.  I think I like Costner as a baseball player more then the movies themself.

Field Of Dreams as awesome.  Probably the best but I like Kevin Costner
Bull Durham follows closely behind.
For the Love of the Game-I liked it but it isnt much of a baseball movie.

I like movies better if the have a modern baseball feel to them.  I liked Moneyball alot but thought the rookie was to happy go lucky.  The Natural was okay but again it is dated and I have a hard time getting into that.

The non serious baseball movies are kind of different to me.  Like Major League, Sandlot, Bad News Bears, Angels in the Outfield.  they are okay b ut just not the same kind of baseball movie.

I think there are alot of serious baseball fans out there and is alot of room for people to expand on the market for them.  Id take some of the better baseball books and make a movie about them.  Game of Shadows would be an interesting angle and Ball Four would almost right itself.  I hope the Three Night in August actaully happens but it seems like that has been a rumor forever.
