Re: Carp Retiring?

The Reds were already better, though. Hate them if you will, and I do, but Cueto-Latos-Bailey-Arroyo-Leake is a really good, dependable starting five. It's like the 2005 Cardinals rotation. Plus, they will probably have Joey Votto for more than 111 games and Choo is a huge upgrade over Stubbs.

They'll regress some, but as long as they have four guys who can throw 200 solid to great innings, a lights-out bullpen and a decent offense, they'll win 94 games. The Cardinals are looking at a rotation that will have two guys who have never even thrown 160 innings, along with Lance Lynn, who might have conditioning issues.

Aye. If he can stay healthy, he really gives them a better bat. At least one that won't strike out 200 times. I still don't understand the logic that they can get away with him playing center because GABP is a bandbox. The Reds still have to play half their games on the road. It'll be interesting to see what happens once they get to San Diego and San Francisco.

It's easy to forget that the Reds finished 9 games ahead of the Cardinals last year.  IMO, the only way that gap narrows is if the Reds fall apart.

Yeah, there's going to be some adventures out there for Choo. Hopefully his terrible defense negatively affects Arroyo and Latos, who the definition of fly ball pitchers.

I think people erroneously assume they played over their heads. The good news is that in 2014, I believe Rosenthal and Miller are going to be ready to dominate. I think the Cardinals will get a long-term shortstop and that Oscar Taveras is going to start killing baseballs. The balance of power is going to shift.

Or if Cueto goes on the DL with a strained vagina.

Re: Carp Retiring?

i think i am rooting for tosenthal to stay in the pen.  i dont care if miller or kelly get the 5th spot in the rotation as long as rosenthal and his 100mph fastball gets some more time to season.

I hope that's the plan. From what we saw last year, Rosenthal really doesn't have even a second pitch, much less the third pitch he would need to be an effective starter.
As far as Miller is concerned, I'd rather see him start the season in Memphis until Garcia's shoulder blows out.

Re: Carp Retiring?

kelly doesnt have a wide range of pitches either.  he has shown he can get through 5 innings tho.  he needs to grow on that and lynn needs to always get through 6.  if that doesnt happen garcia, westbrook, kelly and lynn are going to smoke the bullpen in the first month.

According to Chad, Rosenthal has 4 quality pitches: his fastball, a curve, a cutter and a change up.  We didn't see them because there wasn't a need.

Chad's opinion is that the Cardinals make a terrible mistake putting Rosenthal in the pen.  Pitching one inning at a time, he doesn't need those other pitches, he'll quit using them and be nothing more than a bullpen pitcher for life.  Chad envisions Rosenthal as a future #1, top 10-20 pitcher in the league caliber starter.

And where would Rosenthal pitch in our bullpen?  They spent over $3M to bring back Mujica.  I doubt they did so to have him pitch in the 6th inning.

Lynn reported to camp today 40 pounds lighter than he finished last season.  I guess he took it serious when the FO suggested he needed to get in shape.

Well, that's enlightening. I suppose when you've got a 100 mph and you're only going to pitch an inning anyway, you don't want to be beat with your second-best pitch.

"And where would Rosenthal pitch in our bullpen?  They spent over $3M to bring back Mujica.  I doubt they did so to have him pitch in the 6th inning."

I may be on an island here, but I like Mujica. I think he had one bad inning in the playoffs, and one bad inning in the regular season, but other than that he was nails after the Cardinals got him. I'll go as far as saying the Cardinals don't make the playoffs if they don't go out and get him, considering the flotsam and jetsam they used in the sixth and seventh innings before he arrived.

Wow. What did he do? Chop off a leg or something? That might be taking off too much weight. But I like the commitment.

Maybe not. But he can throw 94-95, and he's got a pretty nasty curve. And he's proven to be a valuable pinch-runner.

He also shaved his beard and got a haircut. So that accounts for at least 10 pounds.
