Rosenthal to the Bullpen

Cardinals confirm that they are not going to start him.

Hummel is saying Miller will eventually be the fifth starter, but it's a matter of when.

Absolutely hate this move.  Send him to Memphis and let him start.

i agree but it is a matter of preference.  wainwright did okay learning in the pen.  i think kelly, lynn, miller and rosenethal are all going to bounce in and out of the rotation this year.

Wainwright did OK in a bullpen where he was able to advance through the various roles.  He started as an early guy, advanced to handling the 7th and 8th innings and later closed when Izzy was injured.

It is pretty much set in stone that Motte will close, Boggs handle the 8th and Mujica the 7th.  Where does Rosenthal fit into the equation, especially if Miller makes the rotation and Kelly is also in the bullpen?  IMO, it's a waste of Rosenthal's talent to have him filling the Brad Thompson role.

And you can't "bounce" guys from the rotation to the bullpen and back again without risking damage to their arms.  A pitcher can't just go from pitching 1 inning at a time to 5 or 6 innings.  The preparation is totally different.  Isn't that why McClellan ended up having surgery?

If Rosenthal may end up in the rotation (due to injury or performance reasons), then start him at Memphis.  He's never started a game higher than AA.  Let him gain experience, and more importantly keep his arm stretched out and force him to throw more than just his fastball.

Re: Rosenthal to the Bullpen

Rosenthal doesnt have any aaa time so i am in favor of him doing that.

wainwright
garcia
westbrook
kelly
miller

scrabble
choate
salas
rosenthal
mujica
boggs
motte

it is pretty easy to see that they will need a 6th starter most the season.  i also think in giving mujica, boggs and motte breaks rosenthal will get plenty of meaningfull time.  it wouldnt suprise me if he took the 7th inning from mujica.  it also wouldnt suprise me if the cardinals are ruling him out as a starter this year and hope a fulling year controling his exposure in the pen with offer more improvenment for 2014 then being in the minors.  idk, they could be trying to stack the roster in win now mode.  i look for it to get sorted out pretty quick once games start being played.  these early spring depth chart issues seems to always chamge by april.

Re: Rosenthal to the Bullpen

Salas really has no purpose on this roster, other than the fact that Matheny will be worried about playing 15-inning games.

Regularly having seven relievers is just a bad idea in general. I'd much rather have Matt Adams coming off the bench and being able to move Craig around at left and right rather than seeing Salas get four innings per month.

Re: Rosenthal to the Bullpen

i thought salas had an acceptable second half last year?

what about scrabble.  he sucks this spring and sucked all 2012.

Him, too. Whoever. I just really hope they aren't committed to this ridiculous 12-man pitching staff.
