No one is suggesting Carpenter is going to win a gold glove. But to this point, he's been a more than adequate defender (much better than Schumaker ever was) and given that he's posted a 1.050 OPS for the spring, perhaps the Cardinals should consider giving him an opportunity to start games at 2B.
He should start damn near every game at second base unless he's needed at first because Allen Craig is playing in right field for Beltran.
I got into an argument with my dad yesterday about Carp playing second. Here's how it roughly went:
ME: So it looks like Carpenter is going to get plenty of playing time at second base.
DAD: Ehh. That's a La Russa move. (Everything unorthodox is a "La Russa move" to my dad)
ME: Yeah, but he's hitting the snot out of the ball. And Lord knows he's better than Descalso.
DAD: You got to be strong up the middle to win.
ME: That's true, but as long as he's not killing them out there and he's hitting I think he'll be fine.
DAD: I don't know. I don't think it's going to work. We saw this with Schumaker.
ME: Yeah, but Schumaker was an outfielder. Carpenter has always been an infielder. He can at least get the proper read. Schumaker was awful.
DAD: God I hated Schumaker.
(I launch into a diatribe about how they've ignored second base since Grudzielanek left. Dad agrees).

I'm with your dad. Except for the part about hating Schumaker. I hated him at second base, but that wasn't his doing.
They can't go into a season with Kozma at short and Carpenter at second. They just can't.

I find the idea of seeing this lineup with carp batting second as an interesting one.
I think Matheny liked Beltran hitting 2nd. Plus a lot of managers don't like putting LH hitters back-to-back. I could live with:
Jay
Beltran
Holliday
Craig
Freese
Molina
Carpenter
Kozma
Pitcher
Likely that is how it will end up and ur right about them going lefty, lefty. My idea is that carp has enough pop to bat second and i think beltran is going to have a so so year. Plus beltran is streaky. Maybe it is to early to tell if carp will be a streak hitter. I like balancing the power out in the lineup as well.

I didn't get to see Kelly pitch yesterday, but I still think he's a rich man's Brad Thompson with control issues. I think he's going to be a fine long reliever, but that entirely too much stock is being put in 100 innings.
That said, I think Wacha is going to wind up being the closest to a sure thing and if the opportunity is there, he should be a member of the MLB rotation this season.
I saw him pitch and not miller. I fell asleep. I thought kelly was crisp. Looking at millers line it looks like he had alot of strike outs. That could be a good or bad thing. Cant really say without seeing him again.

desclaso might get alot of time at ss if carp earns playing time at second. Still i think kozma just has to hit above 200 for mo to insist he starts.

Carpenter went 2 for 2 today with a double and a walk. He played 3B while Desclaso played 2B (and went 2 for 3).
Adams and Jay hit HR
Wainwright went 6 innings, gave up 1 run on 3 hits

Wigginton went 0-4 and is batting .111. He's 35 and two years removed from having any usefulness. If he's this bad by Memorial Day I would suggest they pull the plug. There's no point in keeping him on the roster to justify a stupid, short-sighted move.
It looks like the Cardinals will enter another season with Sugar Shane as their best righthanded threat. Sigh.

Theriot/Schumaker was far worse and they were in first place!
A lineup of:
Jay
Beltran
Holliday
Craig
Freese
Molina
Carpenter
Kozma
...is exciting.

2 year, $5 million deal. It will be interesting to see what the FO will do.
