Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

This raises an issue that I've always questioned.  I'm pretty sure Boras is an attorney.  He's also both Lowe's and Lohse's agent.  So Texas calls and asks about Lohse's availability and what it would take to sign him.  Then, unhappy with the asking price, switches gears and asks what it would take to sign Derek Lowe.  How in the hell isn't that a conflict of interest?  I suppose maybe it's a waivable conflict, but given that Boras would know confidential information regarding Lohse's situation (such as his bottom line number), I can't imagine how he can represent one without it being to the detriment of the other.

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

A Rangers source on free agent pitcher Kyle Lohse: “We are not going to sign Kyle Lohse. I can’t be clearer than that.”

Ouch!!!

Only 5 days to the Bar Mitzvah.

The Kyle Lohse countdown knows no end.

For the money we've laid out, I could have started my own team with Lohse as my ace.

Maybe you can get Mark Prior to serve as the valet parking attendant. A peace offering to the Cub fan neighbor, if you will.

Did the Reds cut him already?
You know, Bartman might be available for that duty. What else would he be doing these days? Can you imagine the look on my neighbor's face if he pulled into the parking garage and had to hand his keys over to Bartman?

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

Boras appears to have completely misread the market for Kyle Lohse--again.

Every team is utilizing advanced metrics to predict and project performance. Lohse had a terrific season last year, but regression to the mean is likely and diminished performance with age is equal if not more likely. Lohse was never going to get a 5 year deal (as it was reported Boras was seeking). He'll be lucky to get the 3 year deal he's seeking now.

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

it doesnt really take advance metrics to figure out loshe was pitching over his head in 2012.

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

realistically, lohse deserves $48/4.  He'll get it if they are patient.

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

I suppose you never say never, but the Rangers response to Boras' 3 year demand was to sign Derek Lowe instead.

FWIW, today is the 5 year anniversary of the date Lohse first signed with the Cardinals.

The Rangers signed Derek Lowe for three years?!? I hope the contract includes time off so Lowe can visit his grandchildren on weekends.

holy shit!  that is a bad contract.  lowe is washed up.  i cant imagen how bad he will be in 3 years.

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

OK, I wrote that poorly.

The Rangers inquired about signing Lohse when Martin Perez broke his forearm.  Boras demanded 3 years for Lohse.  The Rangers said "no thanks," and instead signed Derek Lowe to a minor league deal to fill the spot.

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

Lynn got rocked.  less the 4 innings pitched, 9 hits, 5 runs and 84 pitches.

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

Maybe they should call it the "Lohse Rule"?

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/kyle-lohse-antsy-for-job-scott-boras-adam-laroche-michael-bourn-jeff-francoeur-rick-porcello-zack-greinke-angel-pagan-031713

Again, it’s all hypothetical — Lohse could sign with a club tomorrow, and this discussion would be over. But if the new draft-pick compensation rules hurt a team as well as a player, perhaps Major League Baseball would be more inclined to allow sign-and-trades in the future.

The free agent would stand a better chance of getting market value. His previous team would get a pick. His new team would keep its pick. And the team that brokers the trade would receive appropriate talent in return.

MLB isn't going to allow sign-and-trades any time soon. Just not going to happen.

As for Lohse, what are the odds that he's on a major league roster by Monday? That's one week to go before the season. If a team signs Lohse then they might not even be able to use him right away. Lohse might be having his own spring training but there's no substitute for facing live hitters.

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

I would think Lohse would have to stay for extended spring training with any team that signed him.  Generally early schedules don't require the need for a 5th starter for a couple of weeks.  He could probably be ready by then.

I have a bad feeling the Cardinals are going to lose that pick.  Since no one seems willing to meet Boras' demands, I suspect he's already told Lohse that it's in his best interest to wait until after the draft and see what happens to his market once the draft pick compensation is gone.

Sounds wise to me.  Lohse might be a guinea pig, but I wouldn't be surprised if something along the lines of $40/4, or $36/3 were offered by July.

I would.  There's a reason Kyle Lohse isn't signed.  No doubt part of it is the draft pick compensation.  But a part of it is also that Boras is insisting on 3 years.

Lohse's best comparable is still Ryan Dempster who, at the time he was traded last season may have been leading the NL in ERA.  Dempster signed a 2 year deal.  Dempster is only a year older than Lohse.

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

If loshe gets a 3 year deal i will literally shit myself.  At this point he will be luck to get a two year deal.  Maybe a one year deal with an option for a second.  Who really wants to sign a pitcher nobody wants midseason to a muti year deal?

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

Boras apparently told Peter Gammons that Lohse will not wait until June to sign a contract.

That would be good news for the Cardinals.

boras also probably told loshe he would be shopping for a house right now not selling one.  Maybe loshe should try playing over seas.

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

Per Ken Rosenthal, Lohse is looking for a deal to "at least match Ryan Dempster's 2 year, $26.5M deal."

If true, then he won't get 3 or 4 years.  My ballpark guesstimates going into this were that he might receive offers along these lines, give or take a million or two:

$40/4
$36/3
$30/2

If he holds out until midseason, I still think he'll get that.

Re: Kyle Lohse Watch

If Kyle Lohse holds out until June/July, he's much more likely to sign a 3 month contract than a 3 year contract.

If Lohse signed today, he wouldn't be ready for Opening Day. If he doesn't sign until June, he won't pitch until July. Losing the burden of draft pick compensation would help, but Lohse's value is going down, not up.
