Garcia No. 2 Starter?

P-D says he'll start next Tuesday at Arizona, which would put him on track to start the home opener against Cincinnati on April 8. Lynn, Westbrook and Miller follow.

Garcia finished the spring strong, albeit against a minor league lineup.

He's easily their second best pitcher when healthy, is the surprise that he'll be ready to go?

I'm more surprised that Lynn is ahead of Westbrook.

I think I'm more surprised that it's not Westbrook.

Strauss thinks Miller should've gone to Memphis:

What is up with the news we have been scouting Rick Porcello, Don't we have enough young arm's in the system? Would they not want young arm's in return? Didn't we take Kozma and Greene of Porcello in that year's draft?

I'm among those who believe the club could use another starter. I know that strikes some as heresy. But my model had Miller opening the year at Memphis as a sixth starter in waiting. Westbrook is a free agent after this year. Miller would be a lock for that spot and would almost certainly have graduated this season due to injury on the parent club. Meanwhile, he would have gained traction at AAA. The club selected Koz' over Porcello in 2007. I'm not saying Porcello had to be the guy. (He made the Tigers' rotation and pitched extremely well this spring.) I'm just talking about a broader safety net.

I continue to be baffled by this Rick Porcello stuff. Or why the Cardinals should be looking for a Veteran Arm to push down Miller when that Veteran Arm is more expensive and is likely mediocre. Even if there's an injury, the Cardinals would be better off going to Kelly and then to Wacha rather than exploring trades for crappy veterans.

1. Misdirection play and they are actually after something like a middle infielder, say Tuolwitzki.

2. They know something we don't.

Credit the Cards FO for one thing, trades work out in their favor more often than not.

Re: Garcia No. 2 Starter?

The porcello stuff is confusing.  I dont see how he is better then kelly, miller or wacha.  I also dont see why the cardinals would trade pitching for pitching.  It makes no sense.  If they do this trade it is just for making a bad decision 6 years ago.

In hindsign i would have rather the cardinals not picked up westbrooks option and resigned loshe.  Id feel way better about this rotation then.  That is using hindsight tho.

was it bernie or strauss who wanted tavaras on the 25 man roater to open the season?

Re: Garcia No. 2 Starter?

Bernie wanted Taveras on the roster.

I don't agree with Strauss, but I understand the concern about the starters and innings.  Do I think they'd be better this year with another starter who could absorb innings?  Maybe  But is it better for the long term prospects of the team?  No.

Miller doesn't need to spend another season at AAA, nor should he be relegated to the 6th starter, injury call-up role.  He needs to pitch in St. Louis and gain experience.  The team is better in 2014 and beyond with Miller pitching here now.

AP, this year's team would certainly be better with Lohse over Westbrook, but would you have signed him for 3 years?  Wainwright is now under contract, as is Garcia.  Miller isn't going anywhere and Wacha will be here soon.  That leaves only one roster sport.  I know you don't like Lynn, but not only would you block Lynn, but you block every other pitcher in the organization for 3 years.  IMO, it's much better to have the flexibility to spend that money elsewhere.

Re: Garcia No. 2 Starter?

I would just trade the surplus for other needs.  If enough of the pieces land correct this team is in good shape.  My opinion is u have to mix the known with the unknown.  Wainwright is the only known in the rotation.  We know what to expect with him.  Loshe doesnt scare me for the price he got.  Id take him for 3 years over westbrook.  That is playing what ifs tho.  They never choose westbrook over loshes final price tag.  I hope the club isnt in a position to have to pick up westbrooks opion but if they do the hypothical loshe deal looks even better.

Is it coming from anyone other than Strauss?

I thought it started with Gammons. Or was that Bud Norris?

Gammons came out with the Norris stuff, but Strauss was adding in the stuff about Porcello and didn't really dismiss Norris.

Lynn may have figured out his mechanics.

It was against Miami's regular lineup which, with the exception of Giancarlo Stanton, looks very similar to Washington's minor league lineup from yesterday's game.
