Hypothetical 2014 Roster/Payroll

Yeah, I know 2013 hasn't even started yet.  But the Wainwright signing got me thinking about where this team will be next year when a lot of money comes off the books.  Here's what I came up with.

SP- Wainwright          $19.5M
SP- Garcia                 $7.875M
SP- Lynn                    $500K
SP- Miller                   $500K
SP- Wacha                $500K
RP- Motte                  $7.5M
RP- Boggs                 $3.0M
RP- Rosenthal           $500K
RP- Kelly                   $500K
RP- Choate               $3.0M
RP- ???                     $500K
RP- ???                     $500K
                                  $44.375M

C- Molina                   $15.2
1B- Craig                   $2.75M
2B- Wong                  $500K
SS-
3B- Freese                 $5M
OF- Holliday               $17M
OF- Jay                      $1.5M
OF- Taveras               $500K
BN- Cruz                    $500K
BN- Carpenter            $500K
BN- Adams                 $500K
BN- Descalso             $1M
BN- Robinson            $500K
                                   $42.95M

Wigginton (dead $)     $2.5M

Total                           $92.325M

As crazy as it sounds, they could take on the entire Tulowitzki contract and still end up with a lower opening day payroll.  Tulowitzki is due $16M in 2014.

Imagine a lineup of:

Jay
Tulowitzki
Holliday
Craig
Taveras
Molina
Freese
Wong
Pitcher

or however you'd want to arrange it.

Nice numbers.

It makes more sense to me that, in spite of all of the various trade rumblings we hear of, the only real target would be someone like Tulowitzki.  I just wonder if they'd gamble that much money on a guy who had had so much trouble playing 150 games a year.

" I just wonder if they'd gamble that much money on a guy who had had so much trouble playing 150 games a year."

That's the $140M question.

Conventional wisdom is that Colorado may be willing to pick up some of the contract.  Of course, the more cash they kick in, the more they want in prospects.

If the Cardinals really do entertain this deal, it will be interesting to see if they decide to risk more cash or more in prospects.

The other big-name shortstop that could come on the market soon is Elvis Andrus.  He's set to be a free agent after 2014.  Because Texas has a top shortstop prospect, they may be willing to entertain offers for Andrus, but my concern would be not being able to re-sign him.  I believe Andrus is represented by Boras, and it's unlikely you could convince Andrus to extend without testing the free agency market.  Especially since Andrus should hit the market about the time Jeter will probably retire.

Re: Hypothetical 2014 Roster/Payroll

I have a feeling the Cardinals are going to make a play for Asdrubal Cabrera either at midseason or next offseason.

My wild, pulling-a-hair-out-of-my-ass pick is that they make a stealthy trade for Chase Headley. I'm probably way wrong on this, but with Freese's back issues, I wouldn't put it past the Cardinals to try and get by with some combination of Kozma, Garcia and Descalso at shortstop while going big at third base.   Headley is blocking Jedd Gyorko, who is not a second baseman. The Padres have some decent pitching prospects, but I think the Cardinals could entice them enough to listen on Headley.

We'll see I guess.

With payroll room they have alot of things they coukd do.  Going short term on chase utly interest me.  drew will be back on the market to.  Who knows how 2013 plays out for him.  The case for looking to free agents is that you dont give up prospects.

Re: Hypothetical 2014 Roster/Payroll

There is an intangible here, which is the loss of Pujols.

Since Fors told us that they had hired a firm to calculate the damage if Pujols left, we can assume they also received advise on how to limit the fallout.  I can guess two things the firm identified:

1. be successful in the immediate aftermath of Pujols's departure.
2. don't visibly hang onto dry powder in the immediate aftermath of Pujols's departure.

So, even if business sense were hypothetically to indicate that this should be a rebuilding year, or that they should conserve money this year in a puch for next year, the longterm strategic considerations of the franchise might warrant spending money and adding players to make the club viable for another shot at a title.

With that in mind, my guess is that they would be more willing to add a heavy expense if it were to last only a year or two, OR if they thought, like Holliday, that they had a bona fide talent who was worth paying big money for many years.

It appears Andrus will be crossed off the list soon. Reports are he's working on an 8/$120M extension.

Re: Hypothetical 2014 Roster/Payroll

I wouldn't be surprised if the target is Tulo, but I think they'll explore less expensive, less risky options first.

I just took a slightly closer look at Andrus, and I think the Rangers would be insane to offer him $120/8.  Maybe it is a false rumor designed to push a potential trade partner to pull the trigger?
