Re: Motte to start season on DL

Well, I didn't like the move from the get-go, but not based upon his past or future production.

Looks like a bona fide mistake by Moz.  It might be jumping the gun, but shall we begin the discussion: do the Cardinals eat a Ty Wigginton sized mistake?  Or rather, how long does it take before the Cards FO eats a Ty Wigginton sized mistake?

Re: Motte to start season on DL

Per the P-D, Motte will have a follow-up MRI today to determine whether the tendon is healing properly and what are the next steps toward recovery.

The story notes that the flexor tendon is different from the ligament which leads to TJ surgery, but points out that in situations of severe injury, surgery may be necessary to repair the tendon. Motte's injury is supposedly classified as a Grade 1 sprain, which is the least severe of the grades.

Re: Motte to start season on DL

Hell if his arm was hanging on by a thread the front officewould still be telling the fans that it was grade 1 sprain.

The cards need motte.  Boggs doesnt seem cut out to be the closer and rosenthal seems to be finding himself out there.

How much do we owe Motte?

Re: Motte to start season on DL

They just interviewed Moz. It's a ligament and if it hasn't improved by May 1, Motte is headed for TJ surgery.

Pissa. Another overly-optimistic initial diagnosis from the Cardinals' medical staff ...

Re: Motte to start season on DL

Was just reading a story posted by Goold claiming that he wrote a couple weeks ago that the tendon inflammation has to go down before the ligament damage shows up. But yeah, this news sucks.

Wonder if they'd bring in Brian Wilson for at least a look.

That's freakin' weird.  Do you know what chances of that are based upon the assumption of randomness?!?  Damn the Cards are unlucky.  I want to follow them to Vegas and bet on whatever they don't.

That's fine, but I meant how much do we owe him?  Even before the reports of surgery we could all guess where this was going.  He might not pitch effectively again for, what . . . , 2-3 years?

What happened to him since he was an icon in SF?

Re: Motte to start season on DL

Motte signed a 2/$12m deal. In theory if he has surgery in May, he should be fine for a good part of next season. As a reliever, you would expect him to be effective next year.

Wilson had TJ surgery last year and SF opted for a cheaper alternative. Wilson's presently unsigned. But I haven't heard anything about whether or not he's throwing for anyone or healthy enough to do so.

Re: Motte to start season on DL

Strauss suggests this morning the Cardinals should turn to Lynn and throws out Kelly, Maness and Wacha as his replacements.

Kelly has been brutal since Spring Training began, so I think he should be ruled out of any starts until he can throw better in the bullpen.

I heard that too.  I suppose it isn't an absurd suggestion, but I'd probably stick with Boggs a little while longer before I'd start completely restructuring the pitching staff.

I do, however, think it's probably true that Lynn has a better mental fortitude for the closer role than does Boggs.

Re: Motte to start season on DL

My take on it is that Boggs is simply a wild card as a reliever because throughout his professional career he has always had so-so control. I don't know what he did last season to improve that, but I think it'll prove to be an outlier.

Like I said Monday, they are really going to miss Motte.

Re: Motte to start season on DL

Maybe I am being too cynical, but frankly I think Evan Rust should be able to takeover the role he has been groomed for by now.
