Yeah, that isn't the brightest move in the world. The only thing that saves that guy is the robber isn't smart enough to take advantage of the fact that his weapon allowed him the benefit of distance. All the robber needed to do was take a step back, aim and fire. Instead, the idiot decides to jump the counter and put himself within reach.

You can clearly see one shot being fired, but nothing more after that. I wonder if the gun jammed. Why the gunman felt the need to come running back and jump the counter, after having already gotten his head thumped, is not clear, except that it looks like the gunman was a large badass, and the clerk a wimpy guy, who fortunately knew how to weild a small club like a fencer uses a sword.

Yeah, you definitely see one shot, but I wouldn't assume that was the only one. It's always possible to get a "hot round" (a bullet with more gun powder than expected). It's a bit unusual to see flames in daylight.
The gunman kept "poking" at the target with gun. That's a terribly inaccurate way to shoot, even at that close distance. The clerk was incredibly lucky.

The clerk exhibited poor form early on, but once he got his top hand on the bat and started turning it over, he was making more solid contact.

It's hard to argue against the form of a guy who just got the better of TWO larger guys, one of whom had a pistol, while weilding only a stick (not even a pointy one!).
I've watched it several times, and whether through training, instinct, or luxk, I think his strategy early on was to use short, fast, sweeping strokes to jar the aim of the pistol and to avoid his stick being grabbed by the assailant. After said assailat leapt the counter, the man scored a direct hit on the pistol arm of the asshole causing the gun to drop. The store owner still wasn't out of the woods, though, because the asshole still thought he was going to get the stick away from the store owner and probably kill him if he did. But once the gun was gun, the store own changed strategies just a bit, aiming for the head, but still lightening quick. He scored a quick head hit and the asshole decided to leave, which is when the store own turned things over and started to score some real points.
Kudos to the store owner, but Jeez Louise, don't try that again.
