"Were the other 114 times Quentin has been hit all on purpose?"
Of course. Which is why he's charged the mound 114 times.

"If Quentin doesn't want to get hit, move back off the plate. But if you crowd the plate, you lose the right to bitch when you get hit."
There's a difference between throwing inside and throwing up around a guy's head and shoulders. Bob Gibson threw inside, but he wasn't a headhunter.

Greinke didn't throw at Quentin's head. He hit him just above the elbow with an off-speed pitch (the gun showed 89 mph). If the pitch had been 4 inches further inside, it would have hit Quentin in the ribs.

It looked closer to the shoulder than the elbow. And I've still not read anything about what Greinke said to Quentin, though admittedly I haven't scoured the internet for it.

When I saw the video from behind the plate, it appeared Greinke said something. But at 89 mph, I'm guessing it was a slider that didn't slide.

I just looked at the video. The pitch looks like it backs up a bit. Quentin appears to bring his elbow up slightly to defend himself. If Greinke says something to him, it's only a couple of words.
The best part of the video is the bullpens running in twice. They come out for the first brawl, get sent back, and then come sprinting out when Kemp starts mouthing off at the Padres with half his team standing between him and their dugout.

"a 245 pound guy is charging the mound"
The Dodgers are still crying like Greinke was the innocent victim of some random car-jacking. Don't hit the 245-pound guy in the arm with a 90 mph fastball and he won't charge the mound.
It was a mistake. That's like blaming Aaron Miles for ending Juan Encarnacion's career with a foul ball to the eye.
Really?? So the other two times Greinke hit Quentin, those were also mistakes and Quentin is just a victim of unfortunate coincidence?
If the other times were on purpose, then that is when Quentin should have charged the mound, if that is his style.

He said, "don't look at me. you hang your elbow over the plate and it's gonna get hit once in a while."
Who knows what the fuck he said? But you lose your own argument when you resort to "what did Greinke say" as an explanation for why Quentin charged the mound.

Max, I don't think Artie ever made this argument. I simply brought up at some point during the discussion that Grienke had said something when Quentin stepped toward the mound.

First of all, it's not my argument. It's Quentin's.
"If Greinke hadn't said anything, "There's a chance I don't" rush the mound, Quentin said. "Like I said, there is a history there, which is the reason I reacted like I did. Who knows what happens if he doesn't say anything or if he motions that it wasn't intentional?"
From The Detroit News:
Secondly, it's one thing to use a guy for target practice. It's another thing to taunt a guy after you've used him for target practice. I still don't know if Greinke taunted Quentin. He might have asked him how his family is doing for all anyone has admitted. But I'm guessing it wasn't that.

I don't know, it's unfortunate that Grienke broke his collar bone, but lowering your shoulder without pads into a 245 pound man is going to produce that result. (This is kind of why I think if you remove the pads in football, you'll remove a lot of the head trauma that comes from playing behind swat gear).
As far as hitting him? Three times in three years? It's pretty impressive that you remember the details of each pitcher who's tagged you when you're getting drilled that often. There's something else here that is missing. Maybe what Grienke said... If he says something like, "How you like that bitch?" then I think you pretty much have to go out there, or you risk him throwing at you every time from then out. Another option would have been to pull your pitcher aside and explain things. It's the National League, drill Grienke when he steps up to bat.... Unfortunately I think we see far too little of this pitcher smoking a pitcher because it's considered giving up a baserunner for a very sure out, but I think one pitch could have corrected this pretty quickly now that Zach is in the NL.

Indeed, that's actually what it's there for, to absorb the shock from a side impact, and often to break if need be. Primates--like us--have them, presumably to help survive a fall from the trees. Lots of other mammals don't have them: try looking on your dog, cat, rabbitt, hamster, whatever.

Absolutely and they are wonderful for that. I just have a tough time throwing a broken collarbone at Quintin's feet like it's his fault Grienke went into linebacker mode. I think Quintin was simply going out there to have a bit of an understanding about getting plunked with frequency and Grienke popping off about it. It's also a bit unfortunate for a pitcher to stand on the mound while some guy takes a running charge at him and expect him to keep it together. The momentum alone can cause a bit of an issue. Has anyone handled themselves better in this situation then Nolan Ryan? That's got to be one of the best baseball vids ever. Throw a guy in a headlock and work him over a bit, and Ryan didn't even get ejected! lol

I'm hesitant to bring my own experience into the discussion, and I certainly never played anywhere near the level of Zack Greinke or Carlos Quentin, but I did pitch from the time I was 9-years-old into my early 40s, and I never purposely threw at a hitter. Did I throw inside? Sure. Did I occasionally hit guys? Sure. But I always made sure the hitter knew it wasn't intentional. Tip your cap, ask the guy if he's all right, whatever. Again, no one has said what Greinke said to Quentin, but judging by the reaction, I'm guessing Greinke didn/t ask him what his dinner plans were for after the game.
