Re: Learned from the best

When I first read that, I was surprised the league didn't issue a more serious penalty, but Bowlen has quite a bit of power with the NFL.  For them to get away with a "we did the right thing after we learned" is complete bullshit.  That's like hiring Jack the Ripper to manage the cheerleading squad and then saying "it's not our fault. We called the police as soon as we started finding body parts."

In a just world, the guy who did the videotaping would be banned from the league for life.  McDaniel would be suspended for the rest of the year and next and the Broncos would give up at least their 1st round pick the next 3 years.

Fors, you ignorant slut.

Number one, the Broncos moral compass was pointed in the right direction.  How do we know?  Because THEY TOLD US!

Second, your comparison with Jack the Ripper is misleading.  Note these quotes, "“In no way did we think this situation or type of situation would come up and be an issue for us or for him.  He knew full well what was expected from him in terms of the types of behavior we would expect out of him."  Thus, a more accurate comparison would be to say it was like hiring Jack the Ripper to manage the cheerleaders, but first sitting down with him to EXPLAIN TO HIM WHAT BEHAVIORS WOULD BE TOLERATED AND WHAT WOULD NOT!

And,FWIW, they did not "call the police as soon as they started finding body parts" as you imply.  The article clearly indicates that the Broncos waited 4 days before informing the league, giving them time to conduct their own internal investigation first.  Presumably this allowed them to determine how many within their organization could be proven to be guilty, and those for which only circumstantial evidence existed.  It also gave them a chance to coordinate their talking points, such that they all had the same story to tell.

I particularly like McDaniels's explanation.  Does this sound like it was coached by a team of lawyers and public relations experts, or what?  “We certainly did not view or do anything with the footage, and he was made aware that it was something we didn’t condone in our organization. I failed to follow through and report it to the proper individuals in our organization and with the league.  I made a mistake. I made a mistake and I should have done that right away. We felt we handled it the right way by not doing anything with that but I did not follow through with it."

If you want to get hyper-technical, the more, more accurate comparison would be to say it was like hiring Jack the Ripper to manage the cheerleaders, BUYING HIM A NEW HUNTING KNIFE, but first sitting down with him to explain to him what behaviors would be tolerated and what would not.

It isn't like they hired this guy to sell hot dogs, they hired him to work and prepare video.

I also enjoyed reading the description of his changing position with the team: Scarnecchia remained involved with the team until mid-November. Two hours before the league announced the results of its investigation Saturday, the team said Scarnecchia was on a leave of absence. Later, it said he’d been fired.

"leave of absence" (uh, who takes a leave of absence in the middle of a season?!?) to "fired" (presumably for taking a leave of absence during the season . . . ?).

Re: Learned from the best

"Bowlen has quite a bit of power with the NFL."

Enough power to blatantly ignore the salary cap, win a couple of Super Bowls and not have any serious repercussions.
What cracks me up about this is the Broncos have probably doing this for the past two years and have won, I think, five of their last 26 games. It's like a blind man finding a treasure map.
