SAN DIEGO • Righthanded reliever Eduardo Sanchez, who was on the Class AAA Memphis roster, was claimed on waivers by the Chicago Cubs today as the Cardinals tried to outright Sanchez from their 40-man roster.
This move cleared a spot for lefthander Tyler Lyons, who also technically still is at Memphis, to be added to the Cardinals' 40-man roster.
Lyons, who is on hand, will be recalled officially after tonight's game here to start Wednesday's game against the San Diego Padres. Sanchez, who was 0-0 with one save and a 3.72 earned run average for Memphis, was told today of his reassignment and will join the Cubs' Class AAA Iowa farm club, also in the Pacific Coast League.
The 24-year-old Sanchez, who has battled arm and control issues, appeared with the Cardinals in each of the last two seasons, compiling a 3-1 mark with five saves and a 1.80 ERA in 2011. He was 0-1 and 6.60 last year with 13 walks in 15 innings.
Sanchez had been on the disabled list at Memphis earlier this season with an elbow problem. In the previous two seasons, he had shoulder ailments.
Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said, "There's always a risk when you're outrighting a player."
But Mozeliak said, "He hasn't pitched very well. He was low man on the (righthanded relief) totem pole. We understand the risk but we didn't feel like there was a trade market for him."

Reads to me like Moz thought he could sneak him through and is trying to cover his ass.

When healthy in 2011, he looked like a future closer.

Sanchez has all kinds of arm and control issues. He's not a big loss, but I'm not sure why they would try to sneak him off the 40-man while Marte and Cleto waste space. Pure silliness.

Volquez has been awful, so I'm expecting nothing less than a 4-1 loss.
Also, TTTIB beat the Mets again. And they somehow hit Jon Niese.

I thought MLB banned midgets after the Eddie Gaedel thing.

I didn't see it, but I guess the three runs he gave up in the first inning were unearned.

They clearly aren't picking up Volquez well because Molina doesn't take strikes looking.

It wasn't a strike.

I'm looking over a Cubs forum and it's awesome. So far they are debating if the Cubs should trade for David Price, Matt Moore or Mike Stanton. They are also debating who would be a better free agent signing in 2014: Choo or Ellsbury.

FS Padres is showing last night's scores on its crawl.

Why not trade for all three?

Third time on base for Dellassandro tonight. I think Max fired him up.

Smart move by Matheny. Send the runner so Wainwright can lead off next inning.

Cabrera is the fourth shortstop the Cardinals have played so far this season who has been touted as the favorite for the Gold Glove by his home team's announcers.

Bo Hart just hit a grand slam.
I'm just sayin' ...

According to FSMW, Descalso's grand slam was Pete Kozma's 2nd HR of the season.

Now would be a good time for Matheny to rest Wainwright and let Boggs pitch an inning.

Choate is warming up in the bullpen in case Martinez can't hold a 9-run lead.

Naw. Boggs only gave up a solo 500-foot home run last night. You want to give him 24 hours to enjoy a game when his ERA went down.
