It appears they may have gone with a high floor, low ceiling pick in Gonzalez, then maybe a little more upside with Kaminski. It will be interesting to see if they take a bigger gamble on a signability guy in rounds 2 or 3. It would seem their first 2 picks shouldn't stress their pool money that much.

I don't think this was a particularly deep draft. After Appel, there aren't a lot of can't miss guys.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or serious. Mizzou is making a $4M upgrade in their stadium with the new SEC money.

Nah, I was just giving you shit.

Screw the Padres. Dustin Peterson is going to be at ASU in the fall.

Re: MLB Draft Thread

Another opinion on Gonzalez

"The Cardinals add to their pitching riches with a high-probabilty, low-ceiling lefty in Gonzales, who is a good athlete and could swim through the system quickly. The joke in ESPN Draft Room West is that whoever the Cardinals take will be a star in a few years, so it really doesn't matter. Gonzales may not be that level of an arm, but the chances he gets to St. Louis inside of two years is good.

The Cardinals have another pick at No. 28 as compensation for free agent Kyle Lohse. Gonzales is a potential under-slot selection that could help the club go bigger at that spot. -- Churchill

and Kaminsky

"The Cardinals obviously read my draft preview mention that left-handed pitching was not one of their strengths, as they've taken two of the better ones in this year's class. Kaminsky has an outstanding feel for pitching and could move very quickly in the St. Louis system. There isn't a ton of projection, but the Cardinals now have two of the "safer" southpaws in the 2013 class. -- Crawford"

Think the Cardinals would have taken Williams if he'd have been there at 57

Re: MLB Draft Thread

57) Oscar Mercado- SS

Reading a lot of mixed reviews. Consensus is his glove is a plus and he'll stay at SS, but questions about his bat.

Re: MLB Draft Thread

Ziomek is good pickup for the Tigers. He's probably closer to Ted Lilly than Detweiler.

Meh. This was kind of a rebuilding year for ASU, and Williams was supposed to be the veteran presence, but he wasn't anything special.

Seems like they drafted for the position rather than the player.

I hope that's not a recruiting violation. The NCAA watches ASU closer than the CIA watches Al-Queda.

I meant Devin Williams, the high school kid from Hazelwood West (St. Louis suburb)

I've read Kevin Franklin is using his ASU commitment as leverage. He supposedly doesn't have a defensive position, and the Reds don't use a DH.

He reminded me of that kid they picked a couple of years ago. Jenkins?

Probably a good comparable. The Cardinals had him at Busch earlier this week for a workout. There was a lot of thought they might take him in the first round. I think if he'd have still been there at 57 it would have been tough not to take him.

ESPN on Gonzalez

"Gonzales is a highly polished command-and-control lefty with excellent secondary stuff, great athleticism, and a barely-average fastball. He's mostly 89-90 but will work across the 87-91 range, locating it extremely well, especially down in the zone -- he hadn't allowed a homer all year as of April 28. His changeup is plus, one of the best in this draft, at 77-79, fooling hitters more on arm speed than on action, and his curveball is average to a tick above at 75-77 with varying angles.

His feel for pitching is outstanding, and he can get hitters out with all three pitches with no trouble turning a lineup over. He's one of the best hitters on Gonzaga as well, among the team leaders in average and OBP, and would probably be drafted in the top five or six rounds as a position player, falling mostly because he only shows power in BP. His delivery is very simple and easy to repeat, leading to the plus command.

Gonzales' main drawback is his lack of projection -- he's listed at 6-foot-1, 185 pounds, which is likely generous, and will probably pitch with less velocity when he's going every fifth day. You're probably getting a fourth starter, a league-average guy or slightly worse, but one who's very high-probability and could pitch in the majors this fall or next spring."

Pretty unimpressive.  Salad tossing lefty!

That's unfair. Dunn used to pick up the ball when it stopped rolling.

well not crisply but he did eventually pick it up.  dunn is proof as long asu can hit the ball over the fence u can find work.

I'm reserving judgment because admittedly I know very little about any of these players other than what someone else has written.  But I've seen comparisons to Jaime Garcia (without the arm issues) and a lot of projections that think Gonzales could pitch in the big leagues as early as 2014.  Lefties don't have to throw hard if they have good command and good secondary stuff, and it sounds like Gonzales has both.

AP, just for giggles, I went back and looked at last year's thread.  I found this

The Cardinlas first round draft picks have been seen as solid picks since Kozma. 2008 Wallace, 2009 Miller, 2010 Cox, 2011 Wong. How did this years first round turn out? Is there anyone the nation media sees as a top prospect?

Just going by what I heard last night, Wacha's ceiling is a middle of the rotation stater. Ramsey supposedly compares to Skippy. He's got intangibles. I guess he graduated with a 4.0, albeit with a major in Swamp Reclamation and a minor in making necklaces out of beer can pull tabs. (I made the last part up). It was mentioned both are highly signable.
I think one of the talking heads mentioned Wisdom's future may be as a catcher. The high school kid they picked supposedly has a cannon for an arm.

This isnt exciting to me at all. They drafted one guy who, if everything goes well will be Kyle Loshe and another who will be a fourth outfielder. I expected more out of first round picks. The ceiling over the last few years has been aces and middle of the order everyday players. Sure half of those will fall through but at least the potential was there.

You're tough to please.
