You can't pay a guy enough for that kind of insight.

Stupidity grates on me as badly as it does on you, but I am going to buck the popular opinion on this board and note the NLC currently has the THREE best records in baseball.  I like that, and it's a big change from just a few years ago when the NLC was, and had been, the weakest division in baseball.

The "Comedy Central" thing was annoying. If you include Houston, five of the six teams in the division have made the playoffs in the last 10 years. People talk about the vaunted AL East, but when was the last time the Blue Jays made the playoffs? The Orioles were awful for about 15 years. The Rays were worse than awful their first 10 years.

Well the division did go from 2007 to 2011 without winning a playoff series and barely even any playoff games. But the Reds started drafting and developing talent, the Cardinals followed suit and Pittsburgh consistently had high draft picks, so they were bound to have a few of them turn out OK. I guess we'll see what Theo can do with the Cubs. Right now the team that's really in a bad way is Milwaukee. They traded a lot of talent going for it the last few years. You can't be a small-mid sized market with no farm system. Signing Lohse has proven to be collosally stupid, not because of anything Lohse has or hasn't done, but because teams like that just can't give away draft picks.

Owing to baseball rules, one of the NLC teams must go to the playoffs each year.  mediocre parity does not indicate a strong division.

Re: 6/17 Gamecrap

If I could change one thing on this team it would be to et rid of Wigginton.

The NL Central has won the Wild Card seven times, once more than the NL West and twice more than the NL East:

'98 Cubs
'01 Cardinals
'04 Astros
'05 Astros
'08 Brewers
'11 Cardinals
'12 Cardinals

NL West

'95 Rockies
'96 Dodgers
'02 Giants
'06 Dodgers
'07 Rockies
'09 Rockies

NL East

'97 Marlins
'99 Mets
'00 Mets
'03 Marlins
'10 Braves

Re: 6/17 Gamecrap

One other thing to add: I'm not sure if there has been a division as competitive in the Wild Card Era as the NL Central in 2004. While the awfulness of the division lied in Milwaukee and Pittsburgh for the first half of the last decade, some combination of the Cardinals, Astros and Cubs were all very competitive from 2001-2008.

The NL East was a joke until the Mets and Phillies went down to the wire in 2007. That division was a lay-up for the Braves.

Re: 6/17 Gamecrap

There are more statistically sound ways to argue that the NLC was or wasn't weak.  I'm not going to go there.  My recollection is that in any given season the NLC typically had at least three teams, and often four, that were pretty weak.

In any event, after the Pirates loss, it has the two best records in baseball, and the third place team has the 6th best record in baseball.
