Just guessing, but if Miller is still in the game ; we're ahead .

Can't disagree. The worst thing about this game being a blowout is Curt Schilling has pretty much had nearly three hours to talk about himself.

It is bad when you have to use ur 4th rotation pitcher as the long man. That should never happen.

I don't know how many options they had. Kelly was supposed to be the long man, but he's now the fifth starter. I suppose MM could have pieced something together with the relievers like LaRussa used to with his "bullpen games," but no one out there now is used to going more than two innings.
Martinez has been called up and goes today, and there was a report this morning that Miller may not even miss his next start.

Sam Freeman also coming to #STLCards today with Carlos Martinez. Brock Peterson, Keith Butler headed down. No move to DL for Shelby Miller.-Langosch

well i dont know if it is mm job but a bullpen always has a long man. This is exactly why it doesnt have a long man/5th starter. A simple roster move could have prevented this. You dont want to have use a estblished starter like westbrook in a role he isnt used to. He took a shelling. Hopefully to much damage was done.

According to Bernie's story in the P-D, it's Matheny's policy that the next day starter take over in an emergency such as last night. I'm not sure I agree with that. Personally, I would have cobbled together 9 innings from the bullpen and told Westbrook that he needed to give me innings in tonight's game to save the bullpen. Then, as a precaution, I would have swapped a couple of guys from last night's pen (say Blazek and Butler) with a couple of available guys from Memphis.
I'm not sure there's a right way or a wrong way, but I don't think I would have done it Matheny's way.

There is a reason brad thompson existed. Tlr was anal about bullpen protection but there is a place for it.
