Re: 8/13 GC

Passed ball is the best option here.

I'd take a walk.

Re: 8/13 GC

Mazzaro just threw the one pitch Kozma had a chance to hit, and he missed it.

And of course he strikes out

Re: 8/13 GC

C'mon Dan. Lean into one.

Why is Descalso swinging 2-0?

I loathe Pete Kozma

Re: 8/13 GC

It was around this time last year that they went 19 innings at Busch. I'm not staying up for that.

Re: 8/13 GC

A bunt is the only thing that makes sense here, right?

Re: 8/13 GC

Now you HAVE to bunt with Beltran.

Re: 8/13 GC

That's a professional at-bat by Beltran. The pitcher is after Craig, right?

Re: 8/13 GC

I may as well just get ready for the 12th inning.

Re: 8/13 GC

I can honestly say that's the first time I've seen a pitcher ground into a 6-9-3 double play with the winning run on third in the 11th inning.

Re: 8/13 GC

I'm done. I've seen this game before. The Cardinals will get runners in scoring position, but either Pete Kozma or the pitcher's spot will come to bat every time it happens. Pittsburgh will eventually win on a 37 hop ground ball that somehow eludes the infielders or a broken bat HR.

Re: 8/13 GC

I have a feeling this is one of those games that ends up with someone like Descalso pitching and Westbrook playing third base.

I'm so glad Holliday got a chance to shower early.

If ever there was a moment to teach your kid about catching with two hands, it was certainly that play.

Re: 8/13 GC

I've been wondering about the last out of the 9th, where Beltran was out at third after the tying run scored.  I'd think you'd conservatively stop at 2nd in that situation. What actually happened on that play?

Re: 8/13 GC

This past month has really shown how over matched matheny is.  Anyone can manage a team when the players are winning games for you.  Now is when you see what kind of manager you have.  Can he manufacture production and find little ways to help the team win?  So far the amswer has been no.  Thisis why just anyone cant manage a baseball team.  He is trying to out smart the other side but needs to understand he isnt ticking anyone.  He needs to stop trying to reinvinting the wheel.

The first baseman cut-off the throw home and Beltran was caught in a run down.

It depends on how confident you are that the runner on 2nd can score.  When the first baseman cut-off the throw home, it guaranteed that the tying run scored.  If there's any uncertainty in Descalso being able to score, then getting caught in the run-down isn't a bad play.

"He is trying to out smart the other side but needs to understand he isnt ticking anyone. He needs to stop trying to reinvinting the wheel."

At this point, Matheny lacks creativity.  His only way to try to manufacture a run is to bunt.  Matheny hasn't learned yet to read the situation.  Last night was a good example.  There may be times when having Jay bunt in the 10th was a good idea, but not in a game in which Jay already has 3 hits and the next 3 hitters are Chambers, Kozma and Descalso.  In that case, Jay is the player with the best chance to win the game.

Taking Holliday out of the game was another poor move.  I know Holliday rolled his ankle a little, but he looked fine running from 1st to 2nd on Johnson's bunt.  Removing Holliday meant putting the pitcher's spot in the #4 spot in the lineup which effectively removed Craig's bat from the game as well.  Not surprisingly, in the 2 plate appearances after Holliday was removed, Craig was intenionally walked both times.  Both times, Manness was left to hit for himself with a chance to win the game, and both at bats went as bad as they could have gone.

thats not really lacking recreativity, it is just being stupid.  Matheny would be better off if he just stuck to the general rules of baseball.  Make the same moves that the other managers do.  Stick to the book.
