I was wondering why you don't stick with Wacha in that situation but didn't want to gripe. Still, I'd want to let him go for a second inning.

Have to give Kelly major props. It ain't always pretty, but this team would be closer to Arizona than Pittsburgh without Kelly's performance the last month or so.

With Wacha pitching last night, I think that rules him out for Monday's scheduled Westbrook start.

Wouldn't yesterday have been the normal day to throw on the side?

They need to go waiver wire shopping or something. They cant use the bullpen up like mm does. Their arms are going to fall off or be ineffective. He trust only 3 guys in the pen and uses them damn near njghtly.

Your last sentence explains why waiver wire shopping won't help. Matheny only trusts a small handful of guys. They could put 15 guys in the bullpen, but if Matheny doesn't use them it doesn't matter.
We're 8 games away September call-ups. My guess, Mozeliak adds everyone who has pitched in St. Louis this season. But ultimately, the manager has to be willing to put them into a game.

In defense of mm he doesnt have many options. He has guys like rosenthal, maness and mujica who are really good and a solid left side of the pen. The issues is joe kelly isnt in the pen. They dont have a long man who can swing into late inning relief when needed. Martinez is clearly not ready or they would stop the suffle. Watcha is kind of hit and miss. One night he looks ready and the next he doesnt. They could use someone in that role with major league time. I think mm would be more willing to use someone who has alittle time under his belt. matt lindstrom would be an excellent fit. There has to be someone out there that can fill the void. The front office needs to just tell mm that they will get some help but ur going to use him.

The main reasons I thought he should have left Wacha in for the 9th - get him more experience, keep him more or less stretched out in case a starter is needed, save the other "go to" arms for another day. Did he look bad in the 8th?
