I just checked one of the fan forums at the PD and saw that Goold has "twittered" that the Cards will be trying Craig at 3d next spring. I don't twitter myself but no one challenged the statement's accuracy.
Project a starting infield of Craig, Theriot, and Schumaker, with Berkman in Left. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that Duncan had turned to drink before the season's over. And he may be taking Carpenter, Wainwright, and a couple of other starters with him.

I follow Goold on Twitter and he did tweet that Craig will be shifted back to 3rd.
Strauss tweeted that Berkman's response to those who question his ability to return to the OF was that had had already lost 13 pounds since the end of the season.

Damn. Thought we were getting Elvis and we wind up with Mick Jagger. I hope they can find pants for him that aren't too baggy.

Put me down as being in favor of this move.
The defense is going to be horrendous, especially if they don't find a more capable shortstop, but holy shit do they have the potential to hit.

They are slated to start the season with below average defense at 3rd, SS, 2B, LF and RF. After watching the Cardinals suck at the plate the lineup is starting to look pretty awesome. If they add a real SS or 2B it will be real impressive. There are going to be some innings in the field that are unwatchable though.

That reminds me of the Cheney spokesperson who said that those who question his health should know that he has 24/7 medical supervision.

FWIW, I believe that Theriot's defensive metrics are above average, according to Goold. We don't know yet what Holliday will be like in RF, but his defensive metrics were well above average in LF. I'm not sure why that should be so, but it is clear that letting the third out of the ninth inning of a playoff game bounce off your nuts does not factor as highly in those metrics as they do in the court of common opinion.
Maybe La Russa is having sugar plum fairy dreams along these lines: "we pound the crap out of them in the first few innings, then I make a defensive switch, moving Craig to RF, Holliday to LF, and Freese (or ideally some veteran 3B) to 3B . . . if we are facing a RHP. But if it is a lefty, then of course it's Jay in RF, and . . . "

potential being the key word. we have all heard how ryan's and schumaker's offensive troubles were attributed to their problems on defense, by la russa no less. with all of this shifting of defensive responsibility, i think there is also the potential of screwing up the offensive game of half the team.
