He clearly has gas in the tank...
He definitely has gas left in the tank tonight. I just worry about the long-term effects. If he finishes tonight's game, Wainwright will have thrown exactly the same number of innings as he did last season (regular season only) with 5 weeks left.

After tonight Wainwright leads the NL in Wins, Complete Games and Innings Pitched. He's 3rd in Strikeouts, 5th in ERA and 6th in WHIP. What would he have cost on the open market?
I just hope he stays healthy for a large part of his contract.

There isn't any way to get him into both Pittsburgh series. If they skipped him on Wednesday, he'd open the series Friday, pitch Wednesday in Cincinnati and miss the Pittsburgh series at home. If they keep him on 4 days rest, he pitches Wednesday against the Reds, Monday in Cincy and Saturday against the Pirates.

I didn't think you were complaining. I was mapping it out to see if they could get him both series if they held him back. After tonight's game, an extra day of rest wouldn't hurt, and if it meant getting him to see Pittsburgh twice, it might make sense. Unfortunately it wouldn't work.

This is true , but I'm sure he "discussed" it with MM about the 9th and the manager said go for it big boy . I don't think Rosie started stirring until a base runner was on ...

With Arizona's loss, the Cardinals move 9 1/2 games ahead of Arizona for the last playoff spot. I wonder if Artie would mind if I started a magic number countdown in August.

They'd have the choke like the '07 Mets to not get at least a wild card spot. I still think the key is winning the division. Even though they won it last year, the 1-game play-in game scares me, and then they wouldn't have to play the Braves in the first round, with three of the five games in Atlanta.

Winning the division gets you out of the play in game, but unless they can also finish with the best record in the league, they're going to get either Atlanta or LA in the first round.

Yep. Either way it's going to be a tough road to a pennant.
It's so weird how things have shaken out this year. Atlanta, Washington and maybe Philadelphia were supposed to battle in the east, with LA, San Francisco and maybe Arizona in the west. Here we are, not even through August, and Atlanta has a 13 game lead and L.A. is 10.5 up in the west. Those teams will be set and rested come playoff time. I think the only hope for the Central teams is that they'll still be playing meaningful games at the end of September. Maybe they'll have a little competitive edge, but they're a lot more likely to be running on fumes.
