Cardinals interested in Haren???

Per Rotoworld, Dan Haren has cleared waivers, making him available for trade, and that the Cardinals are interested.  Derrick Goold reported in today's P-D that Washington was looking for a "group of prospects" for Haren, suggesting there may be some truth to the rumored interest.

Washington may want a bevy of prospects, but it's unlikely they would actually tender a contract to Haren (which is the only way they can get any compensation is Haren signs elsewhere).  Last year the tender was $13M.  That's exactly what Haren's making this year, and he hasn't been that good, although he has been more effective lately.  Haren would likely accept the one year tender since it's probably more than he'd make in the open market.

Overall, Haren has 8 wins, an ERA of 4.66 and a WHIP of 1.24.  It was reported earlier this year that his velocity was down significantly.  Since July, however, Haren's ERA is 2.53 and he's struck out 54 in 57 innings, so maybe he's rediscovered his velocity.

IMO, Haren would make sense for the Cardinals, but not at a significant cost.  Washington has little leverage.  It makes sense for them to get something for Haren, but unless they really intend to tender him, it isn't going to be 1st round talent.

Re: Cardinals interested in Haren???

I'd offer the Nationals a bag of batting practice balls and a tube of Clearasil for Davey Johnson's face.

Re: Cardinals interested in Haren???

There must be interest in Haren because Strauss has made references to him over the past week. I'm all for it, and I think the Natinals are bluffing if they want something of significance in return. We're talking about a non-playoff team holding onto a free agent-to-be, who is not going to reject a qualifying offer. The Natinals are stuck. If I'm Mozeliak, I have a chance to add a much-needed veteran and potential lightning in a bottle. This is a no-brainer for the Cardinals.

Re: Cardinals interested in Haren???

In all sincerity, Haren since the AS break would be an upgrade from Nibbling Westbrook, but not at the expense of "a group of prospects." If the Cardinals want to part with Stephen Piscotty and Seth Blair and let the Nashnils pretend they got a good deal, by all means do it. But if Rizzo mentions the names "Jenkins," "Wong," or "Taveras," Moz ought to hang up in his ear and then call the telephone company to have the charges reversed.

Re: Cardinals interested in Haren???

Haren is a no brainer.  Lyonns starts tonight.  Cant have that happen to many more times and westbrook is crap.  However washington should get a ptbnl type deal.  I wouldnt give them shit.  The team that take haren is dont them a favor.

Haren might also be better on a winning team throwing meaningfull games.  Do the nationals still have about 12 people showing up.

They should charge 2 at-bats for every GIDP.

Re: Cardinals interested in Haren???

Keeping with the topic, the Chuck Finley and Kiko Colero trades continue to spread doom throughout the major leagues:

Re: Cardinals interested in Haren???

Salas up . Lyons down .
Sept 1 call ups will feature pitchers , early, and others to follow as AAA winds down . Mo not sure about how much Jackson would get on the field, pending a call up ...

Why would they give Jackson a shot when they can keep rolling Mendozma and his 3-for-42 month of August or Descalso and his iron glove out there every night?
