Cards Acquire Axford

This would've been a great move. In 2010.

To do what? Work on the grounds crew?

Derrick Goold thinks it moves Wacha to the rotation. Seems like they could do that without adding an arsonist to their bullpen.

How this is going to help/work is over my head .........

Maybe the Cardinals are planning a Civil War Reenactment promotion.

Re: Cards Acquire Axford

I don't think anyone can argue the Cardinals bullpen isn't spent, but geez, we got a guy with a July ERA of 5.40 and an August ERA of 5.23.

Ick

LOL. Or maybe Ricketts' Shame.

Speaking of pitching coaches, now would be an excellent time for Duncan to resurface.

Re: Cards Acquire Axford

SB Nation: "The right-hander carried a 9.00 ERA in mid-May, but has settled down recently, posting a 2.70 ERA over his last 40 innings. Overall, Axford has a 4.45 ERA over 54 2/3 innings with 54 strikeouts and 23 walks."

Hmmm ... In all sincerity, everything with him depends on fastball command. If he can throw the heater where he wants, he can mix in that nickel slider and get some silly swings. JV is right. Ol' Sourpuss would have fixed him three years ago in about three minutes. What's the going rate for a pitching consultant these days?

Maybe Carp will reveal some talent in that area soon. There's also the psychological factor. Mujica got better just by moving from the moribund Marlins to the top echelon. Could this be enough to revitalize Axford?

Re: Cards Acquire Axford

I like the move.  I was reading about the idea last night and liked it.  It doesnt hurt and as artie pointed out, he has been good of late.  If he can keep it up it is exactly what the bullpen needed.  Idk if moving watcha into the rotation is smart tho.

Re: Cards Acquire Axford

Axford has been terrible of late.  His ERA over his last 40 innings may be 2.70, but over his last 20 1/3, it's 5.31 and since the All-Star Break it's 6.19.

Axford had a stretch from May 15 through July 24 in which he only gave up 1 run in 32 appearances.  Since July 24, he's been scored on in 7 of 13 appearances, and his ERA in that stretch is 8.25.

His WHIP this month is 1.74.  Axford has been a gas can.

Plenty. But Duncan was the best. Sort of like the actresses who have played Catwoman. There's Juile Newmar, and then there are other people with varying degrees of success.

Change of scenery, then? (Crossing fingers ...)

Re: Cards Acquire Axford

You know what must have been interesting is how and when the Brewers broke the news to him. The Brewers played in Pissburgh last night, and the Cardinals are playing in Pissburgh tonight. Did he get on a plane, fly to Milwaukee and then have to turn around and fly back to Pissburgh, or did he wave goodbye the rest of the Brewers on their way out of the clubhouse?

Ive got to hope for something because what has been done is decreasing in effectiveness.

Re: Cards Acquire Axford

Speaking of change of scenery guys--this got me wondering about our old friend Mitchell Boggs.

When he was first traded to Colorado, he went to AA, and pitched pretty well there.  He was promoted to AAA in late July.  Since then, he's pitched 15.1 innings, allowed 23 runs (only 12 earned) for an ERA of 7.04.  Even worse, he's allowed 30 hits and given 10 walks for a WHIP of 2.61.

This poor bastard's career may be over.

You sort of have to think someone knew yesterday with the Cardinals making 2 moves but only recalling 1 player, don't you?

Two days before the rosters expand, there can be some silly stuff going on. Maybe they were saving a spot for Jose Oquendo's comeback.

He could probably still hit more than Kozma.

But he doesn't give you Koz's defense.

This probably should upset me, but part of me appreciates that Pittsburgh is taking their best shot after so many years of futility.

Re: Cards Acquire Axford

 Morneau .259/.315/.426

Jones .240/.297/.424

I know the talking heads are hyperventillating about this move, but it's an upgrade of 20 OPS.
