Just my opinion, but if you asked me which of the two pitchers was more likely to dominate a game, I'd say Lynn. If you also asked me which pitcher was more likely to implode, I would also answer Lynn. Kelly would be the guy more likely to keep it close and manage the game, but with the understanding you'll need to score 4-5 runs to win. I'd swing for the fences and take a chance that I'd get the good Lance Lynn.
Yeah, but I'm the guy who sticks on 16. Kelly is a jack and a six. Lynn is drawing for a 5-card charlie when you're holding 12.
If the dealer is showing a 5 and you don't stick on 16, you better not be sitting at my table. You'll probably end up with a beer bottle fired at your head.

Perhaps the bigger question now is, is beating out Atlanta for overall best record important enough to keep playing some guys who could stand a couple days' rest?
Yep, because the scenario facing the Cardinals is face Pittsburgh/Cincinnati or face L.A. if they don't get HFA. Here's the pros/cons of each team:
Pittsburgh
+Rotation behind Liriano/Burnett is shaky
+Lineup is hit-or-miss
-Bullpen is deep, tough to hit
-Liriano/Burnett own the Cardinals
-Cardinals are terrible in Pittsburgh
Cincinnati
+Lineup outside of Choo, Votto and Bruce is shaky
+Cincinnati has been terrible in St. Louis
+Rotation seems flimsy outside of Latos/Cueto
+Cardinals can neutralize Choottoruce with Siegrist/Choate
-Latos pitches strongly against the Cardinals
-Chapman is a monster
LA
+Nolasco has taken a beating lately
-Kershaw/Greinke/Ryu
-Bullpen is very, very good
-Lineup is deep
-Puig is a monster
-HanRam is a monster
I'm looking at LA and seeing a team with two aces, a very good lefty (Ryu) and a strong lineup. Wainwright is somewhat inferior to Kershaw, and nobody in this rotation matches up well with Greinke/Ryu. So I'd have to say that on paper, the Cardinals want Cincinnati, but even then, I don't know how much of an advantage they have.
Excellent analysis. The only thing I'd add is most of the Reds have been to the playoffs before, and most of the Pirates haven't. I think that's more of a factor than most people think.
I don't want to have anything to do with the Dodgers. Let them and the Braves beat the shit out of each other.

Kyle Lohse 2 hits the Braves. Milwaukee wins 4-0. Cardinals have a half game lead for home field. Braves play the "game in hand" tomorrow.
The Cardinals have to finish ahead of the Braves because the Braves won the season series. And Carlos Gomez made a few new friends in Atlanta:
short version:
long version:
Seemed strange to me that he got hit in the leg and was REALLY that peeved about it. I'm sure it didn't feel good, but ... well whatever, the Brewers aren't contending for much of anything at this point so why not?
Seriously though, dude needs to lay off the roids, he was out of his mind.
MLBN did an entire segement on the Maholm/Gomez feud, which apparently goes back to when Gomez was playing with the Twins and Maholm was playing for the Pirates. The HBP in the leg wasn't the first time Maholm plunked Gomez. He apparently hit him in the ribs before that and has buzzed the tower a couple of other times. Still, none of it excuses Gomez's behavior last night.

Appropos of nothing, but I was listening to the Reds/Mets game in the car yesterday and the two Brennamans were doing the radio broadcast together. The old man was on one of his rants about how the Reds suck because they can't hit Diasuke Matsuzaka, when junior tries to join the fray by blaming the Indians for releasing him.
"You'd think a team like the Indians that's scuffling would hold onto any decent pitching they could find."
The old man fires back with exactly what I was thinking, except I would have added "... you moronic douchebag," at the end instead of his name:
"The Indians are probably going to make the playoffs, Thom."
Mags was right. 50 percent of what Thom Brennaman says corrects what he just said.

Yep. I agree about playing for HFA. Just wondered what you guys thought.
