DH league playoffs crap

Figured it might be easier if we do an all-encompassing thread rather than one for each series.

TB 3, Texas 1 B4

Props to this home plate umpire for not giving in to this blood-thirsty crowd so far.

I used to like Nolan Ryan, but ever since 2011 when he started bouncing around like a jackass in the stands, I enjoy watching him be miserable.

I think I could beat Jose Molina in the 100-yard dash.

Price takes it home. Nice work by the Rays. Nice to see my first prediction was wrong; here's to many more!

I picked the Rangers too. It's like March Madness all over for me.
Huge cajones by Price.

He's clueless. He opened his post-game media conference by saying he wouldn't make any excuses and then spent the next two minutes making excuses.

Re: DH league playoffs crap

What a scene in Pittsburgh. I'd accuse these people of being bandwagoners, but the Pirates did everything between November 1992 and November 2007 to drive them away. This is in no way comparable to those dimwits in Cincinnati who have gotten to see three 90-win teams in the past four seasons and fail to show up for meaningful September baseball.

Re: DH league playoffs crap

Outstanding move to bat Choo leadoff against a guy who just had one of the most dominant seasons against lefties ever.

Just got home. I'm surprised Cueto is still in the game. I figured he would have faked an injury by now.

Nice game, Johnny. Way to come up big when your team needs you.

Re: DH league playoffs crap

Reds are not that good of a baseball team.  The pirates scare me.

Nah, the Reds are good, but they are fairly compromised. Neither Cueto or Latos is healthy. Dusty had to know that Cueto, who has made two starts since freaking June, should be sat down, but he couldn't help himself.

The Pirates scare me in as much as the Cardinals rotation scares me. I think they basically have to sweep Games 1-2, because this team is helpless against Liriano. If the Cardinals are going to get through Pittsburgh, Holliday, Beltran, Freese and Molina have to hit Liriano.

Re: DH league playoffs crap

I agree, they have to shoot down the pirates in game one and two.  Jumping out is important.

If the Reds don't come back and win this, does Dusty survive?

Reds fans didn't want him back after they choked away the LDS last year.

There was some chatter earlier in the week on the Cincinnati Enquirer's message board from fans hoping the Reds lost last night's game so they'd fire Dusty. As much as various Cardinals managers have frustrated me from time to time, I've never wanted the team to lose just to get rid of one.

Re: DH league playoffs crap

I don't see how they can Dusty. Not saying he doesn't deserve to be fired, but he's guided them (sometimes on autopilot) to three 90-win seasons in the past four years. The Reds are good enough that even Jim Tracy couldn't screw it up. Where Dusty fell short last night was his misguided loyalty in Johnny Cueto, not putting him on a shorter leash and not at least tinkering with his lineup to maximize his odds against a ridiculously tough lefty.

All Jocketty has said so far is Dusty has one year left on his contract. I'm not sure there's much he could have done that would have satisfied his critics. His three best hitters are left-handed. Maybe you move Choo to left and start Hamilton instead of Ludwick, but that doesn't make you any more right-handed and you're asking a kid with a handful of major league at bats to face a nasty lefty the likes of which he's not seen in the minors and play a position he's still learning in a park with which he's not familiar. Maybe you start Mesoraco instead of Hanigan to give you more offense, but it's not like Mesoraco is Johnny Bench.
The criticism of starting Cueto has more validity, but again his options were limited. If he bypasses Cueto for Bailey or Arroyo and they don't win, he's going to get hammered by the fans.
None of which, of course, diminishes my profound and unreserved glee in watching the Reds get broomed out of the post-season again.

And then there's this from Mrs. Latos. I'm guessing a woman who appears to be as outspoken as she and is willing to marry that fruitcake isn't as innocent as she's letting on:

Re: DH league playoffs crap

Bailey hasnt been good lately.  The only guy dusty had worth starting was cueto.  They just fell apart at the wrong time.  Not that dusty helps matters but even the best managers cant over come lack of starting pitching depth.  Even if the reds beat the pirates there team is in poor shape for a 5 game series, let alone 7.  Plus it is hard to blame a manager for losing a one game playoff.
