I don't see how they can Dusty. Not saying he doesn't deserve to be fired, but he's guided them (sometimes on autopilot) to three 90-win seasons in the past four years. The Reds are good enough that even Jim Tracy couldn't screw it up. Where Dusty fell short last night was his misguided loyalty in Johnny Cueto, not putting him on a shorter leash and not at least tinkering with his lineup to maximize his odds against a ridiculously tough lefty.
All Jocketty has said so far is Dusty has one year left on his contract. I'm not sure there's much he could have done that would have satisfied his critics. His three best hitters are left-handed. Maybe you move Choo to left and start Hamilton instead of Ludwick, but that doesn't make you any more right-handed and you're asking a kid with a handful of major league at bats to face a nasty lefty the likes of which he's not seen in the minors and play a position he's still learning in a park with which he's not familiar. Maybe you start Mesoraco instead of Hanigan to give you more offense, but it's not like Mesoraco is Johnny Bench.
The criticism of starting Cueto has more validity, but again his options were limited. If he bypasses Cueto for Bailey or Arroyo and they don't win, he's going to get hammered by the fans.
None of which, of course, diminishes my profound and unreserved glee in watching the Reds get broomed out of the post-season again.
Passan's writeup is quite entertaining. With what we know about Cueto and the fun the fans had with his dropping the ball, I couldn't help but think of Bob Prince's long-time mantra urging Stargell to spread "a little chicken on The Hill".

I am not looking forward to Games 3 & 4. Hopefully the Cards go to Pgh up 2-0.

It sounds tough, but I think you have to bench Choo for Hamilton. Choo is a .200 hitter against lefties and he gives you zilch defensively. I'm taking my chances with Hamilton at least being able to put the ball in play. Win-or-go-home is a game where you need to show some stones. Maybe Dusty would've ticked off Choo by not starting him, but who cares? A right-handed speedster gives you the best odds at the top of the lineup. I have no doubt that La Russa would have gone that route OR played Hamilton instead of Ludwick, and dropped Choo to the bottom of the batting order. Last night was not the night for conventional managing.

That's just a chance you have to take. Starting Cueto was just irresponsible and reckless. As I said, he's started two games since June 28 - against the Mets and Astros. So he went nearly three months between starts, then another eight days between starts. I'm more than happy to see his foolishness cost the Reds, but if I'm a Reds fan I'm wondering why the hell Leake or Bailey were not given starts. Not even Mike Matheny, who is the most loyal, unimaginative manager, would've started Chris Carpenter in the Wild Card game last year, and I don't see a big difference between Carpenter '12 and Cueto '13.

Sentimentally, yes. But to a certain degree I don't care about settling vendettas. I just want the Cardinals to win the World Series. I don't care as much who they beat to get there.

In the late '70s, the Red Sox played a 19-inning game, the last hour of which proceeded mostly without television commentary because Ken Harrelson was shuttling back and forth between the press box and a beer concession stand and Ned Martin passed out drunk.

Bernie sees kelly making a start in game 3 or 4. I would assume miller makes the other.

Bernie suggests Wacha would be a better option than Miller because the Pirates don't hit changeups as well as they hit fastballs, and there's a comprehensive, well-researched breakdown to support his claim that gave me an ice cream headache as soon as I started reading it.
If I was managing this series, I'd start Waino in Game 1, Miller in Game 2, and then Kelly in Game 3 and Wacha in Game 4.

I would agree with that rotation.

Me too. In the game I attended at PNC in late August, Miller was pretty ineffective. It was a sellout crowd, though, so at least that aspect shouldn't be much worse this time around. Hopefully he wouldn't be rattled if they start chanting "Shell-bee, Shell-bee".

Pulled this off a Reds message board:
"A friend of mine, who is the sports writer for the local town paper and has been a huge Reds fan his entire life, went to the game last night. Made the 8-9 hour drive. He posted on Facebook today that the crowd last night was the worst and most hostile he has ever seen (guy has probably seen something like 500 games in his life). To quote him, "It was worse than Philadelphia. I was cursed and threatened and screamed at more times last night than the rest of my life combined; heard more F bombs than in a whole season ofThe Sopranos".
"The guy hates the Cardinals but I'm with him now; after reading about the crap he went through last night and the Fecal Matter Dallas Latos must have went through, I honest to God can't believe I'm saying this... but go Cardinals. I want to puke."

There's one great things about contests involving teams that are there often, as opposed to Pittsburgh who hasn't been there since Nirvana was still doing live shows, and Windows 3.1 was the cutting edge operating system of choice. Hell I was just finishing high school.
I went to a Rams game to watch them play (and destroy) my Dolphins, the Rams were just lighting it up as a franchise, and their fans were out of control. I was cussed out and spit on by a fan just walking to the bathroom (I had the audacity of wearing my Zach Thomas jersey, my only crime). It was new success for the Rams, and we weren't any better with it.
Consequently I went to watch the Cardinals sweep the Braves in the NLDS (before we got our asses handed to us by Mike Hampton and the Mets...) and they were nice as could be about it. Just asked us to beat the Mets for them, and we let them down there.
New success is a dangerous thing in sports, decades of suppressed jokes and failure come out through rowdy and exuberant fans. God help us all if the Blues ever win a Stanley Cup. There will likely be city damage and arson in the celebration.
(I'm sure I'll be just as unbearable if Oregon ever wins a national championship, I've already grown a massive scorn for the SEC in general just because every fan runs around with this attitude that nobody else plays a tough game except for them.)

This is Swiftian "the thing which is not" stuff of course, but I fully expect the apocalypse if the Cubs with the World Series.
I've never been given a hard time rooting for the Cardinals anywhere except Boston. Even the fans in Philadelphia were fine.

I find these accounts to be disgusting. Sports is supposed to be a family event. There is no reason to be disrespectful toward someone like that just because of the team they root for. There is no place for it.

You're right, of course, but there's still something wrong with Mrs. Latos' story. She claims she was accosted in a common area though she wasn't wearing any Reds attire. Apparently Dallas Latos considers herself to be something of a celebrity, but I'd never heard of her nor did I know what she looked like before I started reading about her this morning. I didn't even know Mat Latos was married, and I'm guessing not a lot of the fans at PNC last night did either.
She has every right to go to the concession stand and get herself a hot dog without being assaulted, but considering what was at stake and how long it had been since the Pirates had played a playoff game at home, a more prudent move might have been to stay in her assigned seat. I'm almost certain the Pirates would have provided ample security in the players' wives section, and the wives may have even had a luxury box to themselves.
From reading Mrs. Latos' Twitter messages (I refuse to use "Tweets" as a proper noun), this is no delicate wallflower. This is just an educated guess, but I'm supposing Mrs. Latos went looking for a little bit of attention and ended up with more than she expected or could handle.

And screw the Indians and their fair-weather fans. They were 14th in the AL in attendance this year and had two crowds under 10,000 last month.

And there's some Cockeye State genius in the stands holding a sign that reads "Tampa Bay Sucks." Wonder how long it took her to come up with that one?

Anderson is superb PBP guy and Smoltz is vastly improved as an analyst, but Joe Simpson adds almost nothing to this broadcast.

There is still no reason for doing that to her. That is if it actually happend. Who knows. I mean she could just want attention. And u are right. She is dumb for exposing herself. She is hot tho. I forgive her.
