I assume the cardinals had there shot and passed.

Not necessarily. There was some speculation that Kinsler was the one Texas really wanted to move. No way to know if the Cardinals and Texas ever really entered into serious talks.
Jayson Stark was speculating tonight that Texas wants to jump into the Robinson Cano negotiations and, if they can reach a deal, may try to move Profar in a deal that would bring them David Price.
There's still plenty of time for the Cardinals to swing something. But I'm going to be really disappointed if we're watching Pete Kozma again. Hell, I'd sign Furcal and give him the job over Kozma.

Does this mean I shouldn't use one of my fantasy keeper picks on Mitch Moreland?

The cardinals have the tools to land almost anyone in the majors. I am sure they are trying to enter into the right deal. It is hard to say without knowing asking prices. I will be more then annoyed is kozma is the starting ss. I dont even think he is worth a roster spot. Delscalso has more upside. He can hit alittle and play 3 positions. He also plays headup ball outside of a i believe a baserunning mistake in the ws. Kozma plays head up ass ball.

Ordinarily, no. But I kept David Freese each of the last three years because a I snagged him in the last round.
It was a pretty good deal in 2012. Last season, not so much.

I wonder what kind of interest the Cardinals have in Granderson and Infante. Both strike me as decent acquisitions based on need. Granderson is coming off a complete down season and could be economically achievable. Infante hit well and can play anywhere besides catcher/1B.
Of the two Infante seems crazy valuable to a team like the Cardinals right now, but Granderson at discount could be fantastic for us.

I was reading mlbtraderumors story about the mets being interested in granderson. It said he woukd cost them a second round pick because there first round is protected. My question is, how does a draft pick become protected and how is it fair that it cost the mets less then any other team?

TK is probably your source on this, but I think the top 10 or top 15 picks in the first round are protected. It's not fair in a free market sense, but the point of having a worst-to-first draft order in the first place is helping the have-nots at the expense of the haves. Goddamn socialists are ruining this country.

Teams in the bottom 15 in the league don't lose their 1st round pick. It was actually like that under the old system as well.
The system isn't designed to be entirely fair. The Yankees have already given up their 1st round pick to sign Brian McCann. If they sign another free agent with compensation attached, it only costs them their 2nd round pick also.

I guess there is some logic to that.

The Top 10 picks are protected, but if the Cubs were to sign, say, Carlos Beltran, they would forfeit their second round pick. If the Royals sign Beltran, the Cardinals wouldn't actually get their pick, but get a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds.
It's not fair, but it's not supposed to be fair. The new system was designed to strip away some of the ridiculous signing bonuses, but all it's really done is handicap teams that have small payrolls from overspending on a guy that will only leave school for a lot of money.

Yankees have reached an agreement with Ellsbury. It's reported to be a 7year deal in excess of Crawford's 7/$142M deal.
The Yankees have been preaching that they want to be more fiscally conservative (i.e., get under the luxury tax, and then they miss the playoffs and start throwing around stupid money. SMDH
Makes you wonder if they're moving on from Cano.

I thought I just read that they still want to squeeze in Cano and a starting pitcher. I think their only competition for Cano is Seattle and Detroit, though the Cubs have been laying really low. I'm surprised they haven't been linked to him at all.

Where would the Tigers play him? Or would Kinsler have to move?

Not to worry; they got Pierszynski as a consolation prize. Who'da thunk the Red Sox could get even douchier?

Ellsbury was the top story on the 11 o'clock news, complete with fan-on-the-street interviews.
The Pink Hats are devastated. It's almost as bad as the Jonas Brothers breakup.

Wonder if they'll bring Nyjer Morgan back from Japan to replace Ellsbury.

So the bedt thing that could happen for the cards is for beltran to sign with a team with an the 11 pick or lower?

Crazy stupid dumb. Once u see a good team built using youth and home grown talent it is really hard to see any free agent worth 20million. They over paid for peralta but they kind of had to. The other option was kozma. I cant judge the fa market at all. Ellsbury at 4y/60 to 70 million seems alot closer to his worth.

Yes, sort of, but maybe not for the reason you think.
Under the new system, the team that loses a FA, no longer gets the draft pick of the team signing that FA.
Right now, the Angels have the 15th pick. If the Angels sign Beltran, the Cardinals do not get the 15th pick in the draft. The 15th pick simply goes away. The Cardinals get a compensatory pick between the 1st and 2nd round.
But it still helps the Cardinals because the forfeiture of the draft pick improves the Cardinals current draft standing. Right now, the Cardinals are scheduled to pick 30th (I'm not sure why, but we're behind the Red Sox. As teams forfeit their draft picks, that 30th pick moves up. Also, the more 1st round picks that are forfeited, the earlier the compensatory pick occurs.
After the Ellsbury signing, the first round (plus compensatory picks) looks like this
1. Astros
2. Marlins
3. White Sox
4. Cubs
5. Twins
6. Mariners
7. Phillies
8. Rockies
9. Blue Jays
10. Mets
11. Blue Jays (for failing to sign 2013 No. 10 pick Phil Bickford)
12. Brewers
13. Padres
14. Giants
15. Angels
16. Diamondbacks
17. Orioles
[Yankees forfeit the 18th pick]
18. Royals
19. Nationals
20. Reds
21. Rangers
22. Rays
23. Indians
24. Dodgers
25. Tigers
26. Pirates
27. Athletics
28. Braves
29. Red Sox
30. Cardinals
31. Braves (McCann)
32. Boston (Ellsbury)
The remaining free agents with compensation attached are:
Kendrys Morales
Robinson Cano
Curtis Granderson
Hiroki Kuroda
Ervin Santana
Shin Soo Choo
Nelson Cruz
Ubaldo Jiminez
Stephen Drew
Mike Napoli
Carlos Beltran

A very AL Eastern Division response would be for the Red Sox to overpay for Beltran.
