Speculation going on that the Cardinals are working on a Freese-for-Peter Bourjos swap. Bourjos is an elite fielder and would have a chance to compete with Jay for the starting center field position. If the Cardinals are looking at Bourjos, then this means Taveras is probably slated for right field, which means Adams is going to stick to the bench if he's not traded.

"Freese-for-Peter Bourjos"
Yes please!

Has he just been blocked or is there more to the story. Seems like as 24 he recieved 500ab and was pretty good. Looks like he is jon jays right handed twin on paper only a better glove.

He's mostly been blocked, but he's also had some injuries.
That said, I would take Bourjos for Freese in a heartbeat.

Per a reporter from the Orange County Register, the Cardinals aren't willing to move Freese for Bourjos only. The Cardinals want something else added.
Obviously no one but the parties know what is really being discussed, but if the Cardinals lose an opportunity to get Bourjos by getting greedy, they're being stupid.

Freese isnt useless to the cardinals tho. He would be pricefor a bench play but a decent one compared to what the bench was in 2013. I agree tho. They should get this deal done even if it is one for one.

What if the Angels throw in that Pujols guy? He'd be a good pinch-hitter off the bench with the occasional spot start at first base when Craig is gassed. I'd ask Moreno to pick up a chunk of the salary, though.

I was following the Twitter account of an Angels beat writer. I have no idea if he knows what he's talking about or just guessing, but he claimed the Cardinals offered Freese for Aybar and the Angels said no and countered with Bourjos. The Cardinals reportedly said Bourjos alone wasn't enough and inquired again about Aybar. The Angels reportedly asked for Miller, and the Cardinals said no
Assume this is remotely true. How would you feel about Lynn and Freese for Aybar and Bourjos.
I haven't looked at the numbers close enough, but my initial reaction is, if I'm the Cardinals, I might be willing to do that.

I ask them if they'll take Lynn first.
I also read Kole Calhoun might be involved. Think Matt Stairs, with better hair.

The Cardinals are being stubborn if they think Bourjos isn't enough for Freese. They get substantially younger, faster and better at defense. Yes, they would potentially limit themselves against lefties, because Freese can still hit them, but that's about the extent of his strengths.

Rosenthal is saying on Twitter that the trade is going through, and Freese is presumably going to Anaheim.

Official trade is Freese and Salas for Bourjos and Randal Grichuk.
Grichuk is a former 1st round pick (24th overall in 2009). 22 year old outfielder who hit 22 HR last season at AA.
Maybe I'm missing something, but it seems the Cardinals did really well in this deal. There was talk that Freese could be non-tendered, and Salas was undoubtedly gone. Bourjos adds a lot to this team, and at a minimum, Grichuk adds minor league depth and/or a potential trade chip.
I like this move.

I do too Fors. Especially the Grichuk/Salas part of this. I thought Bourjos/Freese was already in our favor, but getting something of value for Salas is a very shrewd move by the FA in my opinion. Could be that Anaheim just REALLY wanted Freese, but I think they'll probably regret going that far, albeit minorly.
I noted in the other thread but it will get lost with this being the news. I'm ready to write Infante a check right now. Am I alone in my love affair with this guy? He's 32, hit .318 with 44 Ks over 453 ABs. He can play OF/3B/SS/2B. Seems like a crazy ideal #2 hitter to me, and provides some really nice cushion/insurance at most of our weak spots (2B, SS, OF).
Also curious what the price will be for Granderson, and looking because I know his name has already been mentioned. Choo or Granderson would be additions I would seriously stare at if the price presents itself. Choo might even be the more valued there with cost considered. Granderson and Choo both had qualifying offers though, which means we lose a pick. I guess Choo wants more than 4 years of commitment too, and that seems like a lot to me. Is Granderson worth a first round pick? We'll be getting one anyway when Beltran signs, and it's nearly certain to be a better pick than what we're losing to get Granderson, unless Boston signs Beltran.

It seems like the asking price for free agents is really high this year. Perhaps it's the addition of the national TV money. I read somewhere that a team offered Jhonny Peralta 2/$24M, and he asked for 3-4 years at $15-17M per year. Who knows if that's true or not, but if it is, free agency isn't the way to go to fill needs, even though the Cardinals can afford it.
Offline
Yeah Peralta doesn't come with a qualifying offer so he's considered more valuable to acquire because he doesn't mean a forfeited draft pick. I think 15-17 million a year is a bit insane from a player who was suspended for 50 games of the previous season for PED's....
Whatever happens, I'm really coming to trust this Front Office of ours without question. In my mind they have a much easier job this year than they have had in the past with so much open to them possibly with 8 viable starting pitchers to work with, most of which are cost-controlled. This will prove to be a very very long offseason for us, waiting to see the birds get back to the diamond to show off what looks to be a seriously strong 2014 team.

What's not to like? The Cardinals get a plus defender who can steal bases and a former first round pick for two guys who weren't going to play much for the Cardinals next year. Moz avoids a potential public relations land mine by allowing a home grown World Series hero to not just exit softly, but with the claim that he looked out for Freese's interests by trading him to a team that has a need for a third baseman.
If Bourjos can stay healthy, this could prove to be a swindle for Moz.

Im not overly excited. I mean the cardinals got a fourth outfielder and a plus side 22 year old minor leaguer. It isnt like this trade makes that cardinals much better in 2014. Admittedly better but it isnt like they got a middle of the order hitter. However it is a win for the fo for the reasons mentioned above. They got two players they can use for basicly nothing. Salas was the missing link to this trade...lol. more proof moreno has lost his mind. And as much as i like freese he had patoon player ceiling for 2014. I wish him well. This trade was a steal. A monor steal but a steal.

Now if we can find a SS .

Guessing Dipoto pulled the trigger on this one. I'm almost certain Arte didn't know who Fernando Salas is until this afternoon. And I'd lay decent odds he didn't know who David Freese is until this afternoon.
Still don't see a downside for the Cardinals here. Even if Bourjos and the minor leaguer don't work out, the Cardinals gave up nothing they value and saved themselves a messy end with Freese.

Yep, we will see how the offseason plays out but this is a pretty good start. What has been brought up is the the cards saved 4 million bucks

It's a pretty big deal, AP. The Cardinals upgraded defensively at three positions, instantly add more speed and relegate Jay to a bench role that he's best suited for long term. There's still work to be done, but as it stands on Nov. 22, the Cardinals are in really good shape.

Upgrade at 3 positions? U mean u see rf and lf as upgraded because of a better cf or are u in the camp that says this makes craig or adams expendable? I see this as adding a 4th outfielder. Maybe he wins the cf job. Maybe jay does. Wrist surgary is a pretty big deal for a baseball player. Maybe the plan is that tavarez start in triple a. This is just an option at this point. They did trade for an everyday player.

The cost savings probably is irrelevant this year because, unless they trade for Tulowitzki, there isn't a SS on the market who could justify a salary that would get them close to last season's salary.
Although, if the Cardinals wanted to get really aggressive, they could try to swing a deal for Chase Headley, leave Carpenter at 2B, and then go get a SS. Coming off a down season, and 1 yea away from free agency, the Padres could be looking to move Headley.
Let's play with a possible lineup
2B- Carpenter (L)
3B- Headley (S)
LF- Holliday (R)
1B or RF- Craig (R)
1B or RF- Adams or Taveras (L)
C- Molina (R)
SS- Hardy (R)
CF- Bourjos (R)

Wouldn't that be fun?

I suspect he's thinking CF is an upgrade (Bourjos over Jay), 3B is improved (Carpenter over Freese) and 2B is better (Wong over Carpenter).

I posted earlier in the week on the Offseason Thread that the Pads were reportedly interested in moving Headley and that I thought it would be a great move for the Cardinals, assuming they could do something about SS. I then went over the top by suggesting it might be possible for Carp to convert to SS, which probably blew any credibility the post might have had.
