"There was a late-afternoon news conference at Busch Stadium on Oct. 3, 2007. Cardinals Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. had fired general manager Walt Jocketty earlier in the day, sending shock waves through Cardinal Nation and the baseball industry. This seismic event was supposed to mark the advent of the "Moneyball" movement in St. Louis."

If this had been truly gutsy, Bernie would have at least mentioned that part of the reason Luhnow lost some sway within the organization is because he couldn't keep his pants zipped.

I thought Fors had explained it thoroughly in a previous post. Let's just say there's enough evidence out there to indicate Luhnow wasn't just scouting ballplayers in the Dominican Republic.

Max,
Rumor through the organization was that Luhnow has been using his authority over the minor leagues (i.e., promotions/demotions) to coerce sexual favors from players girlfriends. Supposedly the matter was brought to the team's attention by Jaime Garcia's long-time girlfriend who refused.
Speculation was that Luhnow would be fired over this. He wasn't fired, but his authority over the minor leagues has been taken away.
The other rumor was that the Cardinals discovered that Luhnow had an entire 2nd family in the Dominican--mistress, kids, etc... and that the real Mrs. Luhnow was none to pleased. Supposedly Strauss had the story and sat on it to give the team time to work out a quiet exit, but that seems unlikely.
My guess is that the rumor was overblown, but that there may have been some truth to it. At least enough to get Luhnow removed from his position over minor league operations and to have him fall out of favor with DeWitt.

Having fun with the local ladies is not totally unheard of, and it's hard to believe a corporate exec would have his wings clipped for that unless it caused some sort of controversy.

Max,
I think you were posting when I was posting. See post #5, above.

Isn't "simultaneous posting" a 5-yard penalty and a loss of down?
Unless, of course, one of you was outside the tackle box.

Coercing subordinates wives and girlfriends to have sex is sick, literally. And his punishment should be a lengthy jail sentence with a large romantically-inclined cellmate named Jeb, if true.
It's hard to say what to believe because clearly there is tension within the Cards organization and fabricating damaging rumors, or exaggerating half-truths, is not unknown to office politics. On the other hand, in my line of work, this sort of thing is all-too common and where there is smoke there is invariably a raging fire. What Luhnow deserves is to be fully exonerated via a thorough investigation, if he is innocent. The fact that it has all been hushed up makes me suspect that he is more guilty than innocent.
