The Top 10 picks are protected, but if the Cubs were to sign, say, Carlos Beltran, they would forfeit their second round pick. If the Royals sign Beltran, the Cardinals wouldn't actually get their pick, but get a sandwich pick between the first and second rounds.

It's not fair, but it's not supposed to be fair. The new system was designed to strip away some of the ridiculous signing bonuses, but all it's really done is handicap teams that have small payrolls from overspending on a guy that will only leave school for a lot of money.

So the bedt thing that could happen for the cards is for beltran to sign with a team with an the 11 pick or lower?

It doesn't matter which team signs Beltran. The Cardinals get a sandwich pick no matter what. The variable is whether the team that signs him loses a first round or a second round pick.

Crazy stupid dumb. Once u see a good team built using youth and home grown talent it is really hard to see any free agent worth 20million. They over paid for peralta but they kind of had to. The other option was kozma. I cant judge the fa market at all. Ellsbury at 4y/60 to 70 million seems alot closer to his worth.

It depends on which Ellsbury you get. Unfortunately, the one that's worth ~$20 million a year has only played one season.

Red Sox fans, start your ire!!!

A very AL Eastern Division response would be for the Red Sox to overpay for Beltran.

Aye. Victorino presumably moves to center and they have an opening in RF. The problem with Beltran signing with the Red Sox is he can't be the DH on days he doesn't feel like playing. I'm not sure Ortiz even brings a glove to the ballpark anymore.

I cant think of many player in the mlb that are worth 7/20.  Maybe a handfull and they are under 30.

I like the idea of splashy signings but at the end of the day i respect the way the cards spend there money.  They stay way from alot of injury risk and high hr ,high strikeout guys.  Anytime u dont sign a guy and those are ur reasons you have a valid opinion.

I don't think they did when you look at what Ellsbury just got. If Ellsbury is worth 7/153, Peralta at 4/52 is a steal...

13 million for an average mlb ss seem really high.  Supply and demand i guess.  Im not to worried about dewitt spending his money unless it cripples the clubs future.  I dont think this move did that so i accept it.  The ped thing is mostly media driven drama.

Cano to Seattle.  10 years, $240M

You just can't feel sorry for owners who do these stupid things to themselves.

Re: Offseason thread

Furcal signs a 1 year deal with Florida.

Pretty sure the Cardinals don't get compensation for that signing.

Yikes.  Not suprised of the deal.  I figured he would be overpaid.  I am suprised the mariners did this.  I wonder how they think his is going to solve there situation?

Re: Offseason thread

Granderson signs with the Mets. 4/$60M. He's expected to play LF, though I'm not sure if that's because Granderson can no longer play CF or whether it's because the Mets just have a better CF option.

Re: Offseason thread

If I understand the system correctly, the last few signings haven't much helped the Cardinals. The Mets and Seattle had protected picks. And the Yankees are now basically giving away picks that are meaningless. If I'm correct, the current order is now.

1. Astros
2. Marlins
3. White Sox
4. Cubs
5. Twins
6. Mariners
7. Phillies
8. Rockies
9. Blue Jays
10. Mets
11. Blue Jays (for failing to sign 2013 No. 10 pick Phil Bickford)
12. Brewers
13. Padres
14. Giants
15. Angels
16. Diamondbacks
17. Orioles
[Yankees forfeit the 18th pick]
18. Royals
19. Nationals
20. Reds
21. Rangers
22. Rays
23. Indians
24. Dodgers
25. Tigers
26. Pirates
27. Athletics
28. Braves
29. Red Sox
30. Cardinals

31. Braves (McCann)
32. Boston (Ellsbury)
33 Yankees (Cano)
34 Yankees (Granderson)
35. Cardinals (Beltran)

The remaining free agents with compensation attached are:

Kendrys Morales
Ervin Santana
Shin Soo Choo
Nelson Cruz
Ubaldo Jiminez
Stephen Drew

So the Cardinals' compensatory pick could drop 6 more spots.

He's one of the 10 best players in baseball, and he makes them much more relevant. They still have the ability to add more payroll, which should close the gap between them and Oakland/Texas.

Cano's deal is much better than Pujols's, IMO. He's showing no decline and he's a very durable player. Good for them for spending the money they have. MLB owners are flush with cash right now and it makes no sense to sit on the sidelines.

They still have a third or fourth place team.  Thankfully for them, the astros provide security not to be the worst team in the division.  And it doesnt take much to make a contract better then pujols.  They could have paid me 100million and been better off.

Depends upon whether you think the Wood Dynasty and the Soriano Dynasty were separate eras, or if you think there was a continuum.
