Cabrera signs extension

Rumored to be 8/$250M. Added to his current deal, make it 10/$294M.

Re: Cabrera signs extension

Why would a team do this?

Re: Cabrera signs extension

It's days like this that I miss having Max on the board.  This deal is getting universally panned, but I'm sure Max would tell us that Detroit's owner/GM are the best in baseball based on this move.

in reading the various stories, I did come across one line that made me chuckle.  Painfully, I have to credit Keith Law

As for the length, we just went through this with Albert Pujols, who signed a heavily backloaded 10-year deal with the Los Angeles Angels before 2012, only to enter his decline phase on the flight to Anaheim, Calif.

Re: Cabrera signs extension

Yeah, but Moreno already made a killing off pujols before he even boarded the plane.... The play is dissappointing sure, but did you see the TV deal Moreno landed after adding Pujols? 4 times the money annually?

Pujols paid off for him, although no Angels fan will like it at all.

When has one of these huge deals ever paid off?

Re: Cabrera signs extension

The Angels have agreed to a new deal with Fox Sports worth at least $3 billion and expected to cover 20 years, two parties familiar with the deal said Thursday. The parties declined to be identified because the deal has yet to be officially announced.Spokesmen for Fox and the Angels declined to comment.Moreno last year opted out of a 10-year, $500-million contract with Fox, according to sports media consultant and former NBA TV President Ed Desser.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Regardless of the fans insight on whether Pujols was a good contract (Clearly he wasn't), he enabled this to happen by being an Angel. The Angels were able to charge 100 million more a year for TV. He's already made them money...

Re: Cabrera signs extension

You think the tv comtract happen because of the pujols signing?  I dont see how it had an impact.  Maybe slightly just because it showed that they were willing to spend money to win.  However, in reality, they spent money to be average.

Re: Cabrera signs extension

You have the timing backward Alz. The Angels agreed to the TV deal before they signed Pujols. They didn't get the TV deal because of Pujols, they got Pujols because of the TV deal.

The Derek Jeter deal worked out for the Yankees, and even though his tenure in Boston ended badly, you could probably say the Red Sox got their money's worth out of Manny Ramirez. And I suppose given his stature in the organization, the Todd Helton deal wasn't terrible for the Rockies.
But your point is valid. There are far more misses than hits for the teams that sign players to ultra long-term deals.
