I think it was when Molina was a rookie that Wigginton ran over him at the plate in what many of the Cards fans thought was a really dirty play. I didn't agree at the time but have since seen enough of him that I think the evil intent was there.
Molina suffered a badly sprained ankle, I think. Whether it contributed to his knee problems, I don't know.
But, yes, I think he has the reputation of being an asshole.

This story doesn't comment directly on whether the play was dirty, but notes that Wigginton had already broken one catcher's ankle that month, and quotes Wigginton in a revealing way "If he drops the ball, it might be a different ballgame." I couldn't find the video, but it was clearly putting a wicked hit on a catcher in an attempt to cause him to drop the ball on a play during which the runner would otherwise be clearly out. Hard-nosed or dirty in that case is an opinion. I wouldn't want Wigginton on the Cardinals, who in my opinion belongs in a special place in sports for guys like Jack Tatum.
Ty Wigginton, Astros third baseman
If Eric Byrnes is known as the Crash Test Dummy, then Wigginton should forever be regarded as the Human Four-Car Pileup. "This guy will run into, over or through anybody or anything," said Washington Nationals reliever Ray King. Just ask catcher Koyie Hill, who suffered a broken ankle while being steamrolled by Wigginton, or Yadier Molina, whose cage was similarly rattled. Wigginton isn't the most skilled or graceful athlete. But he's a grunting, snorting, collision-inducing machine.

"The point was that it makes more sense to assume Berkman to play the outfield than Derek Lee. Are you suggesting that Lee would have been a better gamble?"
I've never read anything about Lee coming to St. Louis, and I certainly wouldn't suggest a guy who as far as I know has never played the outfield in his major league career ought to be moved there.
But really, what's the difference between signing Berkman and Lee at this point? They're both first basemen, and the Cardinals have that position covered, at least this year.
"If Moz made a mistake it was in assuming he could find two guys who fit that 15-20 HR mold in the positions he had to fill."
Then he's doing his job poorly. Or at least he's done his job poorly in this instance by not looking at the market before he opened his mouth.
"As far as they're concerned, they've addressed third base by commiting to taking another look at Craig. If he fails, it will fall to Greene or Descalso. Tallet was signed to be the second lefty. They are still actively pursuing a backup catcher. I wouldn't hold your breath waiting for them to sign that contingency starter. If they do anything, it will be something along the lines of last season's Rich Hill signing--a minor league deal to someone with major league experience. Given recent history, I'm not sure why you would have expected any different."
So they're relying on a group of guys who have never played an entire season at third base to play third base? Seems like a solid plan. I said I liked the Tallet signing as an educated risk with some upside, but if I had to wager I'd say there's an equal or better chance him being this year's Brad Penny as opposed to the 2004 version of Ray King.
As for the starters, to whom do they turn if one of the Iron Five misses a start? P.J. Walters?
"If the Reds get another season out of Rolen, Gomes, Votto, Arroyo and a few others like the season they just had, then you're probably right. But lets not forget that Dusty Baker is still at the helm of that ship, and lets see how they play as the front runners before we annoint them division champions."
Rolen: Maybe. Gomes: Probably not. Votto: Probably. Arroyo has been nails since the 2009 AS break. And they've got Chapman and Volquez presumably for an entire season.
Wow, someone's in a pissy mood. The M-I-L spend the night last night? (shocked) (shocked) (shocked)

"a special place in sports for guys like Jack Tatum."
Yeah, they call guys like Tatum "perennial All-Pro."

I wasn't in a pissy mood until people started criticizing Jack Tatum.
We should alert Cowboy so he can mediate this dispute by leading us in a chorus of Kumbaya.
Then again, maybe not.

As much as I enjoy a good clean hit that severs your opponent's spinal cord, I knew the truth would hurt you in this case, Artie.

That play happened 32 years ago, Max. Stingley is dead. Tatum is dead. Time to move on.

And when Wigginton goes, I would like to hope that he and Tatum are bunkmates.

FWIW, my recollection is that Moz laid out a strategy to fill holes via both FA and trades. I think he even stated what holes he thought would be filled by which means.

Are you speculating that Wigginton might have the same hope?
If so, let's hope he bunks with Rosie instead.

Not at all. The atheist was questioning the assertion of the afterlife destinations.
Notwithstanding my personal beliefs, I think your suggestion falls into the "Hell on Earth" classification.

Max is (or TK isn't) LARRY BOROWSKY:
" . . . if Berkman could hit like that two years ago, why is it unlikely now? Three reasons. First, his career-long deficit against left-handed pitching has reached a turning point – he can’t hit them at all anymore and should be benched against southpaws. Second, his slump last year (.781 OPS) suggests a much steeper aging curve than Walker’s. Larry posted an .898 OPS in 2003, his last full season before joining the Cardinals, and was carrying a 1.093 OPS in 2004 at the time Jocketty acquired him. Even if we adjust for the Coors Field effect, Walker never fell as far off his peak as Berkman did last year. And the third and most obvious point is that Berkman is not really an outfielder and hasn’t been for years, whereas Walker was a 7-time Gold Glove winner. Berkman will get lifted for defense routinely, he’ll sit often when the other team starts a left-hander, and he’ll sit some more when his knees need a rest. He will almost surely help the Cardinals, but I doubt he’ll help as much as Walker did."

Larry Borowsky should be hired by the post to write full time. He is much better then any of the current writers.

I read that today, too. He'd be great, but I don't know if his price tag is what the Cardinals have budgeted for the position.

He would have to just want to play with his brother because he is worth more then the 1 million the Cards are willing to pay. Didnt Jose and Bengie play together for awhile?

They were together with the Angels for what I think was a pretty long time. I also think they were both on the team that beat the Giants in the World Series.

Yeah. Jose backed up Bengie in Anaheim.

D'ya think having two Molinas on the saem team might fire each of them up to take it to the next level?

I can't answer that question because you've exceeded the cliche limit for one post.
Try putting on your game face and then bring it on.

Only if hte next level includes the words "all you can eat".
I just like the idea of having a good backup catcher to take a load off of Yadi. Plus he might be more willing to give his brother playing time.
