5/12 Gamecrap - Road Trips Completed

The Cardinals have probably completed the most difficult road stretch in almost 90 years, and now they get to play 19 of 22 at home before a trip through the NL West.

They are 19-19 and I'm not sure what to make of them because they've played 12 freaking home games in six weeks. My biggest concerns:

1. No Power - Save for Peralta, nobody is consistently hitting home runs. I've been saying for weeks that Matt Adams is too concerned about beating shifts, and I'm glad to see that the lamestream media is picking up on that, too.
2. Allen Craig - One good series every couple of weeks isn't going to cut it.
3. Shelby Miller - I have no idea what's going on with him.
4. Lance Lynn - Inexplicable one-inning debacles
5. Michael Wacha - Not getting deep enough into games
6. Trevor Rosenthal - No idea what's going on here.
7. Yadier Molina - Maybe I'm being picky, but I think he's taking shortcuts behind the plate, and despite a good amount of days off, his bat has been sluggish the past few weeks.
8. Mark Ellis - Has provided next to nothing in the few weeks he's had as a starter. As predicted, he's horrible against righties (.620 OPS) and is doing zip against lefties.

Maybe being back at home is going to perk things up. And despite all of these issues, they are only 12-14 on the road, which is hardly a disaster. I think if they can continue to play at that pace and win about 52 games at home, they'll end up in the low 90s in wins. However, Milwaukee isn't going away. St. Louis needs a 15-7, 16-6 stretch.

I really hope Miller isn't becoming Anthony Reyes/Colby Rasmus all over again. I don't think I've ever seen Matheny as publicly demonstrative as he was last night. Whatever's happening there needs to stop.

Something strange is definitely going on with him. Matheny said something about his mechanics breaking down, which is what I've been harping on for awhile. I'd be worried about his health if he weren't throwing with good velocity, but to me it looks like his curve, cutter and change have all just...regressed. He just can't command or control them. He might need a trip to Memphis to get himself straightened out.

I was going to post the reyes/rasmus thing last night.  Idk what is going on either but it wont last one way or another.  You dont push the cardinals much until you find yourself on a plane.

What is the deal with pitch selection?  I dont see yadi or matheny getting upset as long as the player is putting in honest effort.  They both seemed put off.

He may be back in Memphis by the time this one ends.

From what I can tell, it's the same old thing. They're trying to get him to use his off-speed stuff, but as soon as he gets behind or runners get on base, he keeps trying to punch his way out with fastballs. It seemed like whenever he shook Yadi off last night, it was because he wanted to throw a fastball.

"the lamestream media"

Sarah Palin's contribution to the American lexicon. Well done, sir.

Whatever he's doing with runners on is what's working, because he's allowed like two hits with runners in scoring position.

Well, if you give up a 2-run dong on a horrible hanging curve with a runner on first, you can say you didn't give up a hit with RISP, but it's still a shitty result. I know he's been battling with guys on base and the results are good so far, but it's not going to hold up over the course of 30 starts.

Re: 5/12 Gamecrap - Road Trips Completed

I don't think it's going to hold up either, because batters are 2-for-34 with runners in scoring position, and that's just unsustainable. Five of the eight home runs he's allowed have been solo shots. Perhaps he should be pitching out of the stretch? I'm not sure.

The problem is that they need Miller to perform well. There's no Wacha to take his place. Jaime Garcia is likely back for a few weeks beginning this weekend, but he's just a replacement for Lyons. They badly need Miller to pull his head out of his ass and figure out whatever is going wrong.
