"Shannon has a nightly come apart, mostly directed at the umps for not calling strikes."
Everyone was getting a little perturbed with the strike zone last night. The plate had no inside corner and the bottom of the strike zone seemed to be somewhere around the lower thigh. McLaughlin's call on Maness' first pitch of the top of the 12th was an exasperated "Fastball down the middle ... at the knees ... ball one."
But it's hard to argue when the strike zone is consistent and he's calling pitches the same way for both teams. It just makes the game unwatchable. I think the bottom of the 6th inning alone lasted 35 minutes.

It seems to be a cardinals trend for closers to pick up saves evsn tho they are not passing the eye test. This was on rosenthals first BS.
Pitch selection was the issue last night. Rosenhausen blazes a fastball past Bonifacio early in the AB and then he gets beat on his third-best pitch. I don't get it. I know you can't just go out there and throw heat every single pitch, but if you have to throw that weak-ass breaking ball, bury it in the dirt or at least don't leave it out over the plate.

This is the issue with baseball. There are fewer and fewer casual baseball fans everyday. Changes need made.

He wasted some high fastballs. I really like the high fastball because it is unhittable. Ive never seen a good hit off a letters high 96mph fastball. However when he wasted them like rosenthal did a few times last night all he did was show the batter his best pitch without making it close enough to get the batter out. I agree with your logic artie. Get ahead with the fastball and then feed him shit. The shit needs to be close enough to get swing and misses but miss the heart of the plate. It seems so simple. The cubs tried and tried to lose all night. They must have finally got the job done but they really had to take matters into their own hands.

I think it's the other way around. There are people who look at going to the ballpark as a night out, but there are fewer hardcore baseball fans. But your overall point is correct. One of the best suggestions I've heard is keeping the batter in batter's box.

I remember Pujols buggy-whipping a neck-high heater from Randy Johnson about 10 rows deep into the left field bleachers in Phoenix, in 2004, I think. But that's Pujols. Good grief that guy could hit.

I like that suggestion. Anything would help. It is alot harder to be a hardcore baseball fan when the game takes 4hrs. Who has 4 hrs/6 nights a week to watch baseball? Extra innings should be exciting. Instead it feels like punishment. Even the folks who go to a baseball game as a night out are getting cheated. If i went to last nights game i wouldnt have got home till 2 or 3am. It isnt worth it. I am sure it is the same for people who live around st louis. Working folks have to go to bed. It is in everyones best interest to shorten game times.
