Why is Martinez starting?

They noticed fatigue in Wacha and are skipping him a start to preserve his arm. I would expect Miller gets skipped soon, too.

Well thank goodness Shano is back to jump-start the offense.

Why not just go to a 6-man rotation then?

We are effectively playing with a 3 man bench since Matheny won't use the backup catcher. Just a matter of time before that catches up with us.

4 hits this inning and no runs.

Freeman has done really good work.

Was just coming to post the same thing. He's earned a spot when Siegrist returns.

Maybe this inning we can get 4 walks and not score.

Nonsense. In fact, I think when Kelly comes back the Cardinals should go to a 7-man rotation. Have everyone pitch once a week so they don't get tired. And you still have Ellis and Descalso on the bench. One hitter from each side.

Nothing wrong with winning 7 of 10, but after winning the first 5 on the home stand, it feels a bit hollow.

Wacha and Garcia are headed to the DL.

I think everyone is satisfied with a 7-3 homestand but I still feel like they gave away two games, one to the Mets and one to the Phillies.

I hope you're matching my sarcasm with sarcasm.

The fucking Bartolo Colon game still irks me. Not just that they couldn't hit Bartolo Colon, but that his offense was a factor.

Awful news, gotta wonder if Jaime's done. And I'd rather have seen Wacha headed for TJ than a shoulder injury, that is really shitty news. Welcome to the rotation Carlos Martinez.... gawwd I hope Brett Tomko isnt looking for work.
Reading the Post Dispatch story, Wacha's injury could be season ending. It did say that Joe Kelly is finally scheduled for a rehab start and could be back early in July.
This year may be more about avoiding career ending injuries than winning.

It's never good when the injury is described as rare and the team has no idea how to manage it.

I'm not sure I've ever heard of a "stress reaction."
Not surprisingly, the Cardinals are downplaying Wacha's injury. They're saying next to nothing about Garcia, which would lead one to believe just about anything, including the notion his arm may have been chopped off by King Arthur during a sword fight stemming from a dispute over passage of a bridge.

For all his faults, Strauss is pretty good at detecting BS, and he said this morning that he believes the Cardinals when they say Wacha will return by July 31. It's up in the air how effective he'll be, though.
