Brewers lose on a walk-off homer by Encarnacion.
Reds are losing 3-0 in the first with Cueto on the mound.

Ordinarily, this might be an opportunity for the Cardinals to pick up some ground, especially with Waino on the mound, but ...
Vogelsong throws seven innings of 1-hit ball, the Gaints' bullpen sets down the last six batters in order and the Giants win, 1-0.
San Francisco's run comes in the seventh inning when Pence reaches on catcher's interference, goes to second on fielder's choice, goes to third on a fielder's choice and scores when Brandon Crawford's flair to left field lands between Holliday, Carpenter and Descalso, who is playing for the third straight game because the manager is an idiot.

I'm with you thru 7, but in the 8th the Cardinals load the bases with no one out. Matheny inexplicably lets Wainwright hit for himself and he promptly grounds into a 1-2-3 double play, after which Carpenter strikes out looking on a 12 pitch at-bat thus earning Budweiser Player of the Game honors. Neshak starts the 8th following a double switch which brings Craig into the game batting 9th and the pitchers spot leading off the next inning.

You only have to watch half of a Cardinals' game this season, because you can be relatively certain they're not going to score. In the top of the first, I walked the dog. In the top of the second, I emptied the dishwasher. I'm about to do some grout work in the bathroom in the third.
You can really get shit done. Makes you feel good about yourself.

I'm going to lose my shit if I keep watching him watch pitches that are belt high down the middle. Seriously. Shoe through the TV.

Leadoff double. Let's see how they squander this ...

Oh my god. A fucking run. Authenticate the ball and send it to the Hall of Fame.

Holy shit. What's the major league record for most runs in an inning? More than two?

Craig grounds out weakly to third. Alert the media.

Anyone else distracted by the douchebag in the Cardinals' jacket in the second row in waving his Cardinals' foam finger?

This strike zone sucks.

Carpenter takes a called third. Go figure.

Never gets old watching the Cardinals turn Vogelsong into Maddux.

Damn. Beat me to it.

Now all they have to do is survive the Rosenhausen Experience in the 9th ...

I can't watch what's about to happen ...

Thank goodness. If they had lost this game, I would have opened a vein.

There's an enormous pressure on Wainwright right now, similar to Carpenter in 2011 and Morris in 2002. Those years Carpenter and Morris had to be outstanding because the rotation behind them was hurt or not performing. I think this is a worse situation because the 2001 and 2011 lineups could bail them out if they didn't pitch well.
Wainwright has been given six runs support in his last three starts. He's allowed two runs in 23 2/3 innings. And the Cardinals are 2-1.

There was also the year Ankiel came up that the Cardinals made the playoffs with 60 percent of a rotation that was held together by duct tape. The difference was you had a manager and a pitching coach who understood when things weren't working and were clever enough to know how to fix it.
How long do you have to watch the same lineup fail with that dumbfounded look on your face before you try something substantially different?

My read on is that Matheny's loyalty is biting him on the ass again. The biggest fail right now is Craig, who shouldn't be starting against right-handers. Taveras comes up...and Craig continues to play against them. If I had to guess based on the past two seasons, Matheny is basically saying to Craig, "Taveras is being forced on me, but you're still my guy. So I'm going to do everything in my power to get you out of this." That's how Craig mysteriously winds up batting fourth and stays in the game last night despite the fact that Jay would've been a better defensive replacement choice.

I'm not qualified to be a carpenter, but if I keep hitting my thumb with a hammer, I'd like to think I'm smart enough to try something different.
It's been three months. Waiting for these guys to morph into the 2013 team is just wasted time.
The first thing I'd do is drop Carpenter to second in the order and put Bourjos in the leadoff spot against lefties and Wong, when he comes back, in the leadoff spot against righties. I knjow Bourjos is barely hitting .200, but if you're only going to play him sporadically anyway, at least take advantage of his speed.
The way he's taking pitches, Carpenter is better suited for the 2-hole anyway. As long as he's going to be stubbron, at least have someone in front of him who can steal a bag. Hitting Holliday second in the order is about as lousy an idea as there could be. Look at last night's game. Carpenter leads off the game with a single, and you start thinking maybe they'll do some early damage, then Holliday hits into a 6-4-3, and it's here we go all over again.
Then I'd bat Adams third and Peralta fourth, or vice-versa if you think leading off the game with three lefties makes them too vulnerable to left-handed relief later in the game. Peralta isn't much of an upgrade from Holliday, but at least he's capable of hitting for extra bases. Holliday is a singles hitter at this point.
Molina bats fifth. Against righties,Taveras bats sixth and plays right, and Holliday or Craig plays left and bats seventh. Against lefties, you can play Craig and Holliday and bat them 6-7. Jay bats eighth and plays center against righties, and Ellis plays second against lefties.
It's an idea. It's not perfect. But it's something.

Matheny and tlr are alike in they back there guys and stick up for them. Tlr wasnt affraid to put players egos in there place and do what was best for the team tho. Idk if that comes with all the clout tlr had with his success and time in the league. Matheny needs to take charge and not worry about peoples feelings.

Also cardinals are letting their season be ran by the comtracts of craig and holliday.
