Re: 7/7 gamecrap

I'm glad an umpire finally called out a batter, Martin in this instance, for sticking an armor-plated body part in the path of a pitch to get a cheap HBP. The rule book says the batter is supposed to make an effort to get out of the way, but you hardly ever see it called that way.

Charlie Morton plowing through this murderer's row of a lineup like he's Walter Freaking Johnson.

Re: 7/7 gamecrap

This change of scenery has made a huge difference for Ike Davis. I still think he would have made a better pitcher than a position player, but I'm glad things are working out for him in Pittsburgh.

Yawn, baseball in 2014 is boring.  Im enjoying watching wainwright man this one out.  Maybe when his spot in the order comes up he can produce a run to.

Re: 7/7 gamecrap

Why is Morton throwing to first with two outs and the pitcher up? Does he think Jay is going to steal? Wainwright is going to sacrifice?

Gathering his thoughts maybe.  Wainwright is one of the better hitters in the lineup.

I feel like the Cardinals are going to have some uncomfortable decisions this winter.

I was headed to bed if it didnt end in the 9th.  Nice to see something exciting.  It is to bad waino  didnt get the win.  This lineup is robbing him of an epic year.

Re: 7/7 gamecrap

Now that I've got time, I can type:

I feel like Holliday has started his decline. He's under contract for the next two seasons, so you have to figure that he's here to stay. Taveras is a precocious hitting talent, so I think he has to be given every opportunity and then some to succeed.

So that leaves the infield. Peralta has been better than I expected and he has one more expensive contract year before his salary goes down to a level that might make him an attractive trading chip. He and Molina are here to stay.

When going into 2015 then, I think Holliday, Taveras, Molina and Peralta are a given. Adams seems like a given, but he's walked eight times. Matt Carpenter hasn't found a consistent doubles stroke, but he can still work pitch counts and draw walks. I'm not one who thinks a certain bat profile has to play the stereotypical position, but if the Cardinals were to add an impact player, it would most certainly be easier to do so at third base rather than second. But then there's Wong, who has his share of boneheaded mistakes, but he's also an exciting player with tremendous upside.

To sum it up, I don't know what they should do, but I know they can't take this roster into 2015, even if it's really early to start talking about that. We thought this team was set up for another few years, but now it looks deeply flawed and needing major changes.

Re: 7/7 gamecrap

But I don't know if they can deal Craig without eating a substantial portion of his salary. At that point, it might make more sense to keep him around in the same role La Russa did. The other problem is that Matheny thinks that Craig is the same guy he was from 2011-2013. That's how we go from Craig hitting a 385-foot opposite field home run off a lefty on Saturday to batting cleanup and grounding out seven times since then.

Re: 7/7 gamecrap

That is half the reason id deal craig, so matheny couldnt use him.  Ive been a huge craig fan in the past.  I think he will be better then this in the future and wonder if other teams will take that risk.  My liking craig in the past is because i thought he would be a lock for 20hrs a year.  You see 20/100 guys alot more then you see 10/100 guys.  He is likely headed for a mean of 10/60 and that guys isnt a everyday left fielder.  Maybe tavarez wont be any better.  He sure hasnt looked it.  He has been just another stale bat in the lineup so far.  If your going to wait on a bat your better off waiting on his then craigs.

More on the utely idea;  i see the issues with his no trade clause and salary.  It is hard for me to dream up trade ideas.  I dont watch and follow enough baseball outside the central to have a solid opinion.  I do think this team needs a winning player on the field everyday.  Berkman was one.  Beltran was one.  They need a leader.  Utley to me is that type of player.  Im not sure who else is out there that fits that bill.
