Make of it what u may
6:31pm: Cardinals GM John Mozeliak says that the team believes it would need to give up one of its own starters to get a “top starter” in return, resulting in a net loss of years of control, tweets Goold.
6:06pm: The Cardinals are “looking for offense not Peavy” right now, reports Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch (via Twitter). Goold says there is no match with Boston, given that Joe Kelly is expected to return to the rotation in short order.
5:52pm: Boston is discussing starting pitching — not just Peavy — with many teams, but there is “nothing imminent,” a team source tells Abraham (Twitter link).
4:20pm: The Braves are also involved in talks regarding Peavy, reports Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe.
4:16pm: The Cards and Red Sox are in active trade talks regarding Peavy, tweets Jon Morosi of FOX Sports.
12:45pm: ESPN’s Jayson Stark is now also hearing that the Cardinals are interested in Peavy, and he hears that something could come together quickly (Twitter link). The only Red Sox game that the Cards have scouted was the Peavy start that Edes originally referenced, according to Stark.

From Strauss' chat:
I still believe the Cardinals may have something in common with the SD Padres, even after the Padres signed OF Seth Smith to an extension last week. Ian Kennedy and Chase Headley fit this team's needs. A return of Matt Carpenter to second base is a consideration. The Cardinals are willing to be creative, as evidenced by Taveras' recent cameo in center field. I would support pursuing G. Stanton at the cost of a significant position piece, even if that piece was Craig or Oscar. Stanton is that transformative. The Seattle Mariners have longstanding interest in Adams and Craig and have had a regular presence at Busch this homestand. The Mariners see themselves as players for a postseason berth -- as they should. Their willingness to deal has been largely overlooked during the pre-trade deadline Silly Season.by jstrauss 12:31 PM

I dont see the cards having a shot at stanton. The marlins would want to rape the farm system or take mlb i wouldnt be willing to part with. Adams and taverez are off li its imo.
I could see kennedy and headley working. And if anyone wants craig they can have him, he is a unneeded piece of a shitty pie.
As for the mariners, i cant think of a single position player on there team.

Taveras isn't off-limits for me if it nets a player like Stanton. The Cardinals need an impact power bat. Taveras may prove to be a dynamic offensive player, but I'm not convinced he'll ever hit more than 20-25 HR in his best seasons, and probably more along the lines of 17-20. Stanton is a guy who will hit 30-40 HR in most seasons, and he's only a couple of years older than Taveras. If you made that trade and gave him the 9-10 year deal it would take to lock him up, you've have Stanton signed until he was 34-35, and barring injury, your lineup would have a defining bat for the next decade.

The problem in acquiring Giancarlo is he's still cheap. I don't think he's eligible for free agency until after next year, so there's no reason for the Marlins to move him.
Strauss' chat is still going on. There was a suggestion about a half-hour ago of trading Holliday to the Tigers for Scherzer.

Putting it like that i guess it wouldnt be a bad thing. This lineup does lack a focal point. I would be scared of locking a guy up for 9 to 10 tho. However im starting to think that is just the price teams have to pay to do business

I think that's exactly right. The only thing I would be concerned about is that Stanton would want some sort of opt-out provision allowing him to opt-out of the deal at age 30 or 31 in hopes of the "last big contract." It seems like those provisions are becoming more and more prevalent, and they are the epitome of stupid.

Teams need to stop the opt out stuff. It is a no win. If the palyer is doing good and can get more on the market they will opt out or make the club rework their contract. If the player is not worth the current contract then they wont opt out and the club is stuck paying over market value. Either way, if say the opt out is in 5 years all that does is insure the club is going to pay above market vaule. Best case senerio is the player opts out and leave.

The trade deadline is two weeks from today. My hope is that the Cardinals can pull off a trade for a couple of starters and send Miller and Martinez back to Memphis; haul in either Huston Street, Chad Qualls or another reliever; and find someone to take the remains of Allen Craig.

Maybe they can turn water into wine while they are at it! Thats a tall list.

I think Ian Kennedy and Qualls can be had. Whether the Cardinals pursue another starter is unknown, but seems to be the best option IMO. Craig is probably here to stay, though.

They had to make a move for a closer. They've been playing really, really well for the past four weeks.

Could they be persuaded to take Craig and a prospect and either Taveras or Martinez? I think both is a steep price but worth considering with a long-term commitment from Price.
Offline
I dont think it will happen. Sure it wont. I dont even care about the money and at this point i dont care if the cards lose tavarez or martinez. Wainwright, price, wacha would be solid.

The Padres got top prospects from the worst farm system in baseball for Street. I think it's safe to say the Cardinals are more than confident in Rosenthal.

Chase Headley to the Yankees.

He's potentially a good bounceback candidate.

Buster Olney says the only thing that's stopped a trade for Peavy has been that Boston wants a legit prospect and St. Louis just wants to take a bad contract off Boston's hands. Unless San Francisco gets desperate, I think this deal happens. Boston is crazy if they are expecting anything good, though.

Peavy isnt that impressive. He is a 4 or 5 pitcher at best. Boston is retarded if they think this is anything but a salary dump. Not many teams desire a pitcher with a 5era and one win. Idk why the cardinals even do. Surely there is something better. Dont get me wrong, he is an inning eater with a history. It would be nice to run him through the dave duncan reclamation machine. Maybe he forgot to take it with him.

Peavy to the Giants.

I don't know why the media defaults into thinking the Red Sox win every trade. Peavy has sucked this season, but the Red Sox came away with a fringy starter prospect and a warm body in relief. I think it was a solid move by the Giants. We'll see what Mozeliak has in mind by Thursday.

I was just going to ask about what the red sox got. At first glance i figured the players were of some value since it looks like the red sox took some salary to get them. If they are not impressive im suprised the cards were not more in play. I still say to some degree having a good farm system hurts you when trading for players who are not super stars. I think teams hold out more because they know there are better players to ask for.
