University of Missouri/Dorial Green-Beckham

This issue has obviously been getting a lot of attention on a Mizzou message board of which I'm a member, and not surprisingly, there is little objectivity, so I'm curious what those of you post here think.

I'm not sure how much any of you would have followed this story, but here's a quick summary:

- On National Signing Day 2012, with much fanfare, including a nationally televised audience on ESPNU, then #1 high school recruit, Dorial Green-Beckham chooses Missouri over a host of other major college programs.
- During his freshman season, DGB is arrested for smoking marijuana in a vehicle on the football stadium parking lot. He's with 3 other players, two of whom are immediately dismissed from the team. DGB pleads guilty to a misdemeanor charge of trespassing. He is suspended for 1 game.
- During the 2013 season, DGB leads the receiving corps in TDs, sets a school record for TD receptions in a single game and is dominant in the SEC championship game Mizzou eventually loses. He is named 2nd team All-SEC.
- Shortly after the team's Cotton Bowl victory, DGB is arrested in a car with 2 other men. All three are arrested for possession with intent to distribute marijuana after a pound of marijuana, scales and baggies are found in the car. DGB has not been charged, and isn't expected to be charged as one of the men has apparently admitted the drugs and paraphernalia was his.
- Last Saturday, DGB was involved in an incident involving an alleged assault of his girlfriend and another young woman. DGB was not arrested. On Thursday it was announced that DGB would not be charged with a crime; however the police report of the incident was released to the public. Per the report, DGB came an apartment where his girlfriend was at (not her apartment). He knocked, but the resident who answered wouldn't let him in. Per the report, DGB pushed his way in the apartment, pushing the door knob through the apartment drywall and shoved the 18 year old female resident down a small flight of stairs. Though his girlfriend later denied it, according to texts the girlfriend sent to the other victim, DGB drug the girlfriend out of the apartment by her neck. The day after the incident, the girlfriend sent a series of texts in which she pleaded with the other victim to recant her story and decline to prosecute in order to save DGB's standing on the team. In one of the texts, the girlfriend states something to the effect that "it's bad enough he's hurt me, but now he's hurting my friends too," suggesting a pattern of abuse. The other victim eventually did refuse to prosecute, telling the police she feared media and student backlash because of who DGB was.
- On Friday, DGB's adoptive father released a statement in which DGB accepted responsibility and claimed he was seeking counseling.
- About an hour after the DGB statement, the team announced DGB was dismissed from the program.

Personally, I think Coach Pinkel and the University made the right call. This guy was a ticking time bomb, and I don't care how talented a football player he may be, I don't want him associated with the school I root for. For the past 24 hours I've been reading a number of posts, many of which think the decision was unfair since he wasn't arrested or charged and some of which seem to say "so what, if he makes the team better, who cares." In fairness, there have also been several people who agree with Pinkel's decision.

With the exception of TK, none of you guys care about Mizzou sports. What do you think?  Would you want this guy on your team?

I've been following this because you told me about this kid when Mizzou signed him. Objectively, I think they made the right call. This sounds like a kid who may never get it, and if he gets it, it will be too late for him to do anything about it.

My dad asked a question about this when he was here last weekend. How come it always seems like wide receivers are the jerks? Is there some kind of DNA strain that combines the ability to catch a football and selfish behavior?

And I should clarify--I don't wish the kid bad luck. He'll land with a D-II or FCS team, play a season and be eligible for the 2015 NFL Draft. At 6'6", 225 and with 4.3-4.4 speed he'll probably still be a 1st round pick (if he keeps his nose clean until then--big if).

To be honest, I'd have less problem with him being a Ram than a Tiger.

Yeah, Mizzou took the right path here. It sucks, but Pinkel and Alden's credibility is on the line. Had it just been about marijuana, a two-game suspension would suffice. This latest incident is scary behavior.

Mizzou football just keeps churning out the genius as evidenced by the latest incident involving Aldon Smith.

Takes a special kind of stupid to get into an argument with an LAX TSA agent and then tell the agent you're carrying a bomb.

Re: University of Missouri/Dorial Green-Beckham

Mizzou needed some good news. It got some today.

Mizzou received a verbal commitment from a WR from Georgia. In and of itself, not a huge deal. But a lot of people have been questioning whether Pinkel made the right call with DGB. For those questioning, these quotes might help answer the question.

"I saw an interview where reporters asked him, 'How do you balance the right thing to do with what hurts the team?'," Imatorbhebhe said. "Coach Pinkel looked at them and said, 'We don't do that here. We do what's right first and foremost.'"

Imatorbhebhe said he's not piling on Green-Beckham. It could have been any player. But that was validation for him that everything he thought about Missouri was correct. It gave him tangible evidence that he wasn't getting lip service from the coaching staff.

"It's a good fit. It's a great fit, with the values their program stands for. Everybody from the GAs to the strength coaches -- at other schools, it can be fake or a show. It wasn't like that there. It felt like home. Why would I keep waiting?"

I assume it has African origins.  Mizzou's announcers won't have any easier time pronouncing it.  One good possibility is he has a younger brother who also holds a Mizzou offer.  If Mizzou is lucky enough to get both on campus, the announcers can then just refer to them as Daniel and Josh.

Did I read somewhere that Oklahoma picked him up?
