I'm listening to Edmonds and McKernan interview Ryan Theriot and it's actually really good. They talked a bit about playing for the Cubs. If I had to guess, I'd say Edmonds was happy to be a Cardinal and has no regrets, but he would like to see an alternate universe where he plays 81 games a year at Wrigley.

Cardinals hit the jackpot in the competitive draft lottery and get a pick between Rounds 1 and 2.
Nothing like lucking into a high draft pick

Theo Epstein's rant was pretty epic. I'm not sure why he's complaining about the Cardinals when he should be bitching about the system.

He shouldnt be mad that the cardinals have done more with less....he should be mad he has done less with more.

Agreed to a point, AP. I think the Cubs have done a great job of tanking and racking up lots of great prospects. They did finish second in the Tanaka and Darvish sweepstakes. But, they could've added any of Greinke, Anibal Sanchez, Cano, Ellsbury or even brought Garza back. Those were the best free agents after 2012 and 2013. I understand that they were trying to take guys like Hammel, Arrieta and Feldman, inflate their value and get more prospects. They will probably even take those prospects to trade for someone like Stanton. But I don't think it's an "either or" situation when you play in the country's third largest market and can afford to spend more than $75 million on payroll.
I'm happy that they've tanked the last three years, but it's also ridiculous for Epstein to be upset that the Cardinals win a good spot in the competitive balance lottery. If the Cubs can throw out a terrible team so that they can angle for Kris Bryant in the draft, then the Cardinals, who play in a small market, should be given the opportunity to draft a player at 33.

What theo is really taking issue with is the lottery itself and low market teams being good. He is basicly either saying that it shouldnt exist or good teams shouldnt be able to take part in it. It is a lucky break for the cardinals. Theo is sucking on sour grapes.
I thought gould made an excellent point. The cardinals have to win to make money. The cubs dont. The cardinals have to draw fans from 3hrs away to fill seats. I think it is fair to say the cubs could survive more on local attendance then the cards. The cubs can spend more on international prospects. There is a million angles. The powers that be decided to have this lottery. He is just being a baby.
