7/31 GC

Matheny sends the squad out onto the field with the rallying cry: "Let's try not to get swept by the Padres."

That's good. He needs to be humbled.

Re: 7/31 GC

Taveras hits it to second base, but on a line. That's good to see.

Re: 7/31 GC

Taveras has had more hard hit balls today than the last four weeks combined.

As fors stated the craig/taverez tension might have had more of an effect on the clubhouse then we have really factored in.  It is likely something taverez has never delt with.  The ball is in his court now.  Not to combine thread topics but i wonder if trading craig was something mo did just to take the weight off mm hands.  Writing taverez name on the lineup card got alot easier.  If that is the case it doesnt say mhch about MM jock size.

"It is likely something taverez has never delt with."

Or was probably even aware of. I think the notion that there was any tension between Craig and Taveras to the point it became necessary to move one of them is probably overstated.

Re: 7/31 GC

Really?  It has been reported heavely that the clubhouse is like family.  That this trade is sobering.  I highly doubt taverez felt part of that "family".  It is never fun being the outsider.  Hell taverez barely speak english.

This isnt exactly a ringing endorsment by matheny.

He’s got to go play,” Matheny said. “He’s got to play the game. He’s got to play it right. That’s going to be part of his responsibility. There are things that he’s going to have to continue to work on to get better. He’s going to get an opportunity to do that.”

Matter of fact i had to search for this quote.  The first artical had the full quote...the second time it was listed it was softened and the second to ladt sentence removed.

Re: 7/31 GC

Strauss said this morning that there were sideways glances at Taveras the second time around on how he would encroach on Craig's playing time. I was dead set against the Cardinals bringing Pierzynski in, but I hope his presence and the Craig trade breaks up the chumminess of a bunch of millionaire athletes pouting about their friend being traded. I want the players to have a clubhouse that is best conducive for winning, but not at the expense of winning.

I just came to post this.  The more you listen to what's being reported by those familiar with the clubhouse its sounds like the Cardinals had a clubhouse that was extremely comfortable--probably too much so.  It's one thing to be comfortable if you're performing well and the team is winning, but if the players were offended over the idea that a player hitting .237 with no power might lose at bats to a potentially better hitter, then that's a problem.  At the end of the day, the inmates don't run the asylum.

It's pretty ironic that the Larussa regime was thought to be so unfriendly to young players and yet it sounds like the Matheny regime is much, much worse.

"Strauss said this morning that there were sideways glances at Taveras the second time around on how he would encroach on Craig's playing time. "

That's bullshit. It's not Taveras' fault Craig is hitting .240. If Craig had been playing like Allen Craig, Taveras would still be in Memphis and the Cardinals would be in first place.
This is a major league baseball team, not a Cub Scouts pack.

Re: 7/31 GC

I hate to play the "tlr would have done this" card but you start to see that there was a reason he was able to manage a lifetime and become the 3rd winning manager in the history of the sport.  Tlr had his preferences toward scrappy wanabes and always leaned on the guys that had been around a while. However he was never scared to make a decision that was best for the club.  Be that the ozzie deal, scott rolen or rasums.  His authority wasnt questioned.  Ask steve kline.  You may have disagreed but you always knew trl was doing what he thought was best and wasnt walking on egg shells for the sake of players feelings.  If the ship was going to go down you knew he would be driving it.  I know comfortable wasnt a feeling in his clubhouse that was shared by many and you knew what he said went.
