The one I expect will need TJ surgery when this season is over, if not sooner.

Re: 8/12 GC

I just can't deal with this team anymore.

I'm not sure there's been a more frustrating year.

Re: 8/12 GC

Probably need to begin advertising a night in September where Descalso plays a different position every inning and the give-away at the gate will be a horn and a rubber nose for the first 15,000 fans ..........

2003?

That year at least provided Pujols chasing a batting title, plus Edmonds and Rolen at their peak. I think I could stomach a game from that 2003 season now. In 11 years, it's going to be hard to convince me to watch a random June game from this squad.

How about a game where Descalso plays all nine positions wearing a horn and a rubber nose? I'd pay to see that.

As I recall, a leaky bullpen doomed that team.
Not for nuthin', but I hope Matheny expected Redmond to bring in Dunn to face Adams last night. But I have a feeling he didn't.

That might be understating it. They deployed Esteban Yan, Jeff Fassero Pedro Borbon, Jr., Dustin Hermanson, Lance Painter, Mike DeJean and Russ Springer. It was one of the worst MLB bullpens of the last 15 seasons...and they lost the division by three games. Three stinking games.

In fairness to Springer, he was one of the few trustworthy relievers in 2007-2008 and Hermanson helped the White Sox win a World Series.

Re: 8/12 GC

I'm trying to take this season a bit in stride and look for positives. Maybe the recent successes have made them a bit complacent and a year of missing the playoffs will light a bit of a fire in a few of them. Wainwright has pitched about 700 innings the last two seasons (ok, probably an exaggeration, but you get my point) and could probably use a full off-season.

Bottom line is this team has played about as bad as it possibly could and they're close. In 2015, regression to the mean suggests an improvement.

Was Dave Veres the closer that year?
I used to think his first name was Bullshit, because every time I'd look in a box score, it would read "B.S. Veres."

It took a moment for me to get that, but once I did I laughed my ass off. Nice work Artie.

I think Isringhausen had been signed by that point, but started the season on the DL, not to return until later in the season.  But that's just my memory and I could be completely wrong.

I know 2003 is the year Max always pointed to for his disdain for the front office because their response to the sinking ship was a complete of bad relievers (Sterling Hitchcock???)

Re: 8/12 GC

Yeah, if any of you got tired of reading Max complain about Sterling Hitchcock and Mike DeJean trades years after it had happened, you should've been there while it was going down. Hitchcock was solidly above average for the six starts he gave the Cardinals, but Max wasn't going to be convinced of that.

My favorite Dave Veres memory is from 2001. Cardinals are playing the Indians the weekend before the All-Star break, badly needing a win because they are possibly going into the break with a losing record. They jump on the Indians 6-2, but Andy Benes blows the lead in the fourth inning. Here's the entire recap of the 10th inning:

INDIANS 10TH: VERES REPLACED TIMLIN (PITCHING); Thome homered; 1 R, 1 H, 0 E, 0 LOB. Cardinals 6, Indians 7.

That inning lasted all of one pitch.
