Taveras "has a lot to learn."

Taveras, also a lefthanded hitter, sat out the right-field start for little-used Shane Robinson, another righthanded hitter, but Matheny indicated Taveras might not have played anyway.Matheny said before the game, Taveras “has a lot to learn. He’s got a lot of things he needs to improve on in every aspect of his game.”Regardless of his .206 average, some of that improvement falls into the category of baserunning/hustle. On Wednesday, Taveras, running from first with two out on a sixth-inning double by Jay, first watched the right fielder and then made a poor turn at second and didn’t pick up much speed going to third, where coach Jose Oquendo had to stop him, even with pitcher Justin Masterson coming up next.“The aggressiveness wasn’t there,” Matheny said.Masterson rescued this failing by singling to score Taveras but in a subsequent at-bat, Taveras didn’t get to first quickly enough for Matheny after being frustrated at grounding to first base with two runners on and the rookie nearly was doubled up.Matheny said he understood Taveras’ frustration, to a degree. “He wants to do his part. He wants to have a big at-bat there. But your part is to get to first base as fast as you can,” Matheny said. There have been “plenty of conversations since,” said Matheny, referring to Taveras and the Cardinals’ staff. “Those (are reminders) that that stuff isn’t going to work because we’re here to win on every out, on every play. Every turn on the bases means a lot.”Matheny added: “He’s got people around here that are willing to teach if he’ll be accessible in thinking about the game. He could view it as a day off or he could view it as an opportunity to get better, just like every other one of our guys.“There’s a group of guys who are going to go about it with everything they’ve got. We just need everyone else to be doing the same.“Our job is to try and continue to teach. And sometimes, there are tough lessons. He gets it. But getting it and applying it ... those are steps.”Asked if Taveras might be back in the lineup against a righthander tonight, Matheny replied, “We’ll see.”

Re: Taveras "has a lot to learn."

Interesting. I don't disagree that Taveras has a lot to learn. He looked choppy running around the bases and it was a big mistake to look back at the fielder instead of picking up on Oquendo. That said, for a guy who was whining two days about sportswriters being meanies to his coaches, it's a weird twist when Matheny gets candid about a player messing up. I really don't mind tough love, but this is a team chock full of underachievers and I don't see a whole lot of tough lessons being applied through the media to them.

I agree tk.  What right does he have to throw taverez under the bus when some many other are failing as well and he just got his panties in a twist over critical comments.

Im starting to lose alot of respect for matheny.  He hasnt learned how to be a leader.  I think he is getting worst.  I dont mind the family type attitude but he needs to be the stern father not a sympathetic one.   I liked tlr way of doing thing alot now that i see mathenys.  He didnt make excuses and he always publicly had his players back.

Re: Taveras "has a lot to learn."

I've lost a bunch of respect for sure. He has no problems publicly criticizing his rookie, but this team collects stupid baserunning mistakes and fielding blunders like its gold. If he's going to get tough, why not do it across the board?

Yeah, I saw a bad read, not a guy who wasn't hustling.
I understand that rookies have to earn their keep, but this is bizarre, coming a day after Matheny practically had to wipe away his own tears because people were being mean to his team. Maybe in the clubhouse Taveras is a jerk who thinks he's entitled to playing time, but if that's true he's hiding it well on the field and in the dugout.
If these guys are still butt-hurt about poor Allen Craig being traded to make room for the new guy, then they need to get over themselves.

Re: Taveras "has a lot to learn."

The thing I didn't like about the Taveras running thing was that there was 2 outs at the time. There wasn't any reason to be trying to read the ball. Just run and pick up the coach.

That said, I agree with everything everyone had said. Matheny's act is getting tiresome.

Re: Taveras "has a lot to learn."

When Carpenter hit his HR today, Taveras seemed to be among the most enthusiastic in the receiving line. If O is a selfish jerk, he was hiding it well.

Re: Taveras "has a lot to learn."

As with the craig and rosenthall thing, i think matheny just lacks nuts.  Ypu expect your boss to jump your ass sometimes.  You expect him to do his job.  When he doesnt over a period of time that is what u expect.  It seems like your being picked on when he does.  It is something that takes time to change.
