8/19 Gamecrap

Wong is trying to hit home runs now instead of just letting it happen.

Re: 8/19 Gamecrap

Gameday says Wong has swung at two pitches outside the strike zone in this at-bat.

Now a third.

Re: 8/19 Gamecrap

Earlier tonight Al said the two defensive teams in the NL were playing. I assume one is the Reds. I've never seen a 3 team baseball game.

Taveras is a really, really bad base runner. That is awful.

Re: 8/19 Gamecrap

As much as we bitch about Mathenaging, Brennadork and Idiot Sidekick whined for about half an inning last night that the Reds keep finding new and creative ways to lose baseball games.
It says something when you pine for the good old days when Dusty Baker was managing.

In all sincerity, the Cardinals are a very good defensive team, as long as the opposition doesn't hit the ball to third base, second base, or a corner outfielder, or doesn't try to steal a base.

They lead the league in successfully getting the ball back to the pitcher from home plate after a pitch.

Jay was on 2nd, Taveras on 1st with 2 out.  Robinson singles to center.  Throw home gets cut off and Taveras is out at 3rd by 15 feet.  This was probably about the 6th or 7th inning.

To call it bad base running, you'd have to see the full field and all of the angles.  If there is genuinely a concern that Jay could be thrown out at home, then sacrificing yourself to ensure that the run scores isn't a bad play.  If Jay was more than likely to score, then Taveras' play ended a rally and prevented Carpenter from batting with 2 on and 2 out while down by 1.  I didn't see enough of the replay(s) to know whether or not Jay may have been at risk.

Okay, i did see that play.  Didnt know it was tazerez who got punched out at third.  I wasnt really able to watch close.  I glanced up when tv got loud.  I saw jay scored and called it a good play.

It's an underappreciated skill. I think we can all relate to Mackey Sasser's heartbreak.

Now I can kind of see how O drives Matheny crazy. It's not just that he made the third out at third base, it's the manner in which he made the third out at third base, and the situation.
He kind of lallygags to second, then picks up the pace and tries to make it to third, but he never looks at Oquendo. In fact, if you saw the isolation replay, it's not clear what he's looking at. Pretty much everyone on the diamond but Oquendo. I think he may have even waved at a couple of people in the stands.
And then he slows up approaching third and allows the third baseman to tag him out. Fortunately, Jay kept running full speed and touched the plate before O got tagged.
And keep in mind it was at a huge point in the game. Jay was the tying run, and Carpenter would have been up with runners on second and third.
