Labor Day Gamecrap

I'll be honest, I have no clue how this team finds itself tied for 1st as the holiday arrives. As much as anything, I suppose I chalk it up to league-wide mediocrity.

But here we are. Let's see if they can find a way to do something this month. I can't see this team making a playoff run, but I suppose stupider things have happened.

Re: Labor Day Gamecrap

You never know. Among the positives are the return of Molina, the imminent returns of Wacha and Motte, and the superb job Lyons did keeping the hole from getting deeper in Saturday's first game. But somebody's always ready to come up small.

Re: Labor Day Gamecrap

they seem to be hanging on by a thread at all cost.  just barely staying good enough not stay in the picture.  the frusterating thing is they division has been theirs for the taking for months.  they just wont take it.  the cubs are playing good and they split by winning the last to game.  ill give them the benifit of the doubt.  I believe they said last night that the schedule has them playing one or two series against teams out of the division.

Re: Labor Day Gamecrap

It's been a weird season. Regardless of the standings, I seriously wonder who will be on this team besides Molina, Holliday and Peralta next season. The Cubs are starting an arms race with all of their power bats. Mozeliak makes decisive moves when something isn't going right.

This is going to be a clunker.

Re: Labor Day Gamecrap

Geez-us. The way McLaughlin and Horton are talking today, you'd think the Cardinals are the second coming of the '98 Yankees.
As much fun as yesterday's comeback was to watch, that win gave them a split, at home, against the Cubs. The only reasont hey're tied for first place is because Milwaukee's mediocre pitching is reverting to form.

You're not buying Horton's suggestion of a "first place surge?"

Re: Labor Day Gamecrap

The Cardinals couldn't score three runs off Gerrit Cole if he gave them four outs.

Kozma will be on the team. He's Matheny's binkie.

I don't think I like Gerrit Cole anymore. He's starting to give off a Mark Prior "I'm-the-best-pitcher-in-the-world" vibe before he's accomplished anything of substance.

Don't you guys look pretty foolish for doubting this team.

It is a different team when someone is ripping the ball...hopefull the rest catch on.  Not sure holliday can keep carring this team like he has the past 3 games.

Re: Labor Day Gamecrap

It took a 6 game losing streak by Milwaukee for us to go ahead of them.

I'm concerned about the pitching myself. We're not getting it done on the mound.

Re: Labor Day Gamecrap

Masterson has been aborted to the bullpen.  It is sept 2nd so assume there is more help in the pen.  If we dont see masterson putch again this year that might be worth a couple wins.

Not bad for a guy who's never gotten a clutch hit in his life.

It is fun to see.  What this season has been lacking.  I miss seeing players get hot and carry the team the way rolen, pujols and edmonds could.  It has been lacking all year.  Makes baseball fun.

And holliday is fun to watch hit.  He murders the ball.

I heard the arguement and and i think it is vailid that kozma should have spent the season on the 25 man over delscalso.

Based on production alone, Kozma should have been on the roster ahead of Ellis.

I was in favor of the signing of Ellis at the time, but let this sink in--the Cardinals spent over $7M this season on Ellis and Ty Wigginton.  Ouch.

Re: Labor Day Gamecrap

A huge fault of MM that is being somewhat overlooked because of is in game disablities is MM not resting guys.  Craig should have been on a steady time share.  Peralta basicly played everyday.  Same with carp and molina till molina got hurt.  It is 162 games.  You have to get players rest.

There has been 137 games played.  Carp has sat out three games, holliday 4, peralta 6.  This team has looked about as unfreshhing and in a grind as a team can look.

Im speaking in games started.

MM has 3 guys who will likely play over 150 games.    i know injuries have alot to do with it.  Guys play more when healthy of course.  This team has looked flat tho.  Guys could have used more breaks.

2011-2004 list of players over 150 games started.

Pujols 157 2010
Pujols 158 2009
Pujols 153 2007
Pujols 154 2005
Pujols 153 2004
Eck 154 2005
Holliday 156 2010

Descalso plays third and Kozma doesn't, and he hits left-handed. Now, with the benefit of hinsdsight, one can make the Kozma argument, knowing that it would require an act of the Missouri legislature for Matheny to give Carpenter a day off, and Descalso's fecklessness at the plate for the first 4 1/2 months of the season.

"I was in favor of the signing of Ellis at the time"

I thought he was a good pickup. I expected him to hit ~.270. The one thing Ellis has given them when he's been available is good defense, especially in comparison to Wong. He's probably been the best defensive second baseman they've had since Grudzielanek.

Re: Labor Day Gamecrap

"This team has looked flat tho."

There are days they've looked worse than flat. They've looked dead. Matheny has basically wasted two roster spots - Descalso, Cruz (before Yadi got hurt) and then the fifth outfielder spot after Yadi got hurt. He's been playing with 23 men.
If you're not going to play Descalso at least once a week to give someone else a rest, why have him on the team? As a left-handed pinch-hitter? You're wasting the only thing he brings to the team, which is the flexibility to play three different infield postions (and now four, I guess, since he started a game at first base last week, which should never happen).
Cruz grew cobwebs again until Yadi got hurt, and then they figured out they needed to go get someone. I would imagine Cruz will be one of the Sept. callups, so there's no reason not to use Pierzynski more in the last month here.
And as much as I like his perserverence, Shane Robinson has no place on this team anymore. Grichuk is a better option. Even though Shano's defense is very good, Grichuk's arm is better, he covers almost as much ground, and he has more pop in his bat. The only thing Shano has over Grichuk is speed on the bases, and the margin isn't enough to keep him on the team when both of them are healthy.
