The Red Sox blew an opportunity in the top of the first, and it's partly the plate umpire's fault. Cordero couldn't find the strike zone with a divining rod, loaded the bases and then went to 3-0 on Middlebrooks. The next pitch was about six inches low, but the umpire gave it to him and Middlebrooks grounded out to the shortstop on the next pitch.
The silver lining is Cordero ended up throwing 29 pitches, but the way the Pirates' bullpen has been going lately, that might be a good thing for them.
